settings. But it’s best to use the dedicated Lark Sound app to adjust settings such as noise cancellation. The receiver module provides more control, with a large dial for gain displayed with LED indicators. There is a 3.5mm output for linking up to the camera and a USB-C port to allow connection to a computer, as well as pairing and mode- switching buttons. Pushing both toggles between mono and stereo. The £149/$139 Lark M2 provides 48kHz/24-bit audio output, with a total of ten hours of shooting at up to 300m/984ft range. hollyland.com

has a receiver and charging case that powers all three components. Being so compact, there are some compromises. The TX units have no space for a 3.5mm jack, so you can’t use a lav mic but have to stick with the internal omnidirectional mic. And they don’t have a clip, so are fastened on by a magnet. The transmitter units have a single button, used for changing

output levels and adjust noise cancellation settings. For use with cameras, Android or iPhone, there is a complete set of adapters and cables. And the units attach to clothing with a built-in magnet system. The Airmic Pro transmitters supply eight hours of continuous use each, with two full extra charges in the included charging case. The Airmic Pro receiver can stay connected to a mobile phone in playback mode, eliminating the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting. That’s a nice touch. iconproaudio.com

The Icon Pro Audio Airmic Pro is a dual-channel system which comes with two transmitters and a receiver in the charging case. The two transmitters have high- quality omnidirectional condenser microphones built in; these have a claimed 115dB of SPL, which is better than many rivals. That is surprising for a kit that’s just £154/$140. The compact units do have a jack for a lav mic, but these don’t come with the kit. The range is very good at 250m/820ft, and the receiver features an OLED touchscreen display to set mic gain, monitor

the rejection is greater and ambient noises are mitigated. A switchable roll-off filter helps minimise the pickup of unwanted low- frequency noise, while a switchable low-cut filter makes for better isolation of unwanted noise and effective reduction of wind. The mic comes with the AT8134 foam windscreen, too, plus a 61cm/24in Y-shaped cable with a 5-pin XLRF to two standard 3-pin XLRM connectors. It’s also phantom-powered. audio-technica.com

the microphone’s internal system or choosing discrete mid-side signals for later manipulation – a unique feature. It is equipped with two independent electret capsules, one that’s configured as narrow cardioid and the other configured in figure-of-eight MS mode (central- lateral), with provision for adjusting the width of the stereo image in post- production. So you can choose between a wide sound recording angle where the microphone captures more ambient noise, or a narrow sound recording angle where

Audio-Technica’s BP4029 is a stereo shotgun mic using technology initially developed to broadcast major outdoor sporting events. This means, instead of being exclusively for close-up dialogue, the Audio-Technica can record distant sounds and cut out off-axis noise. The 236mm/9.29in microphone has independent line-cardioid and figure-of- eight elements in a mid-side arrangement with switch-selectable internal matrixing. This allows the choice of selecting a left- right stereo output (wide or narrow) via
