3 LEGGED THING STR3AMCASE
British company 3 Legged Thing is known for its funky tripods, but has now moved into audio with the Str3amcase system. This comprises three 2.4GHz, lightweight wireless units with built-in microphones that can be attached to the wearer using a clip or magnet. With one dubbed the receiver and two transmitters, the system allows up to three individuals to be recorded simultaneously – as long as one is talking into the receiver which also has a built-in mic. If the interviewer is behind the camera chatting to two talking heads, it’s ideal. Featuring a wireless operating range of up to 50m/164ft with line of sight, the £100/$130 3 Legged Thing Str3amcase is ideal for content creators as it comes with USB-C and Lightning leads to plug into a smartphone or camera via a 3.5mm lead. The three units come with furry windshields and all fit inside a USB-C-compatible charging case. Putting the RX and TX units into the case charges them and means they automatically sync together. There is a five-hour usage time with the li-ion rechargeable batteries. The receiver mic has a 3.5mm headphone input for real-time monitoring, while 3.5mm sockets on each of the transmitters can connect lavalier mics for a more professional look. Each mic has simple controls including one-key noise reduction and a button to re-sync. 3leggedthing.com
RODE WIRELESS MICRO
With lots of people using smartphones to create video and vlogs, Rode has built its smallest and simplest wireless microphone system, the Wireless Micro. It’s really tiny, a truly pocket-sized wireless system with versions for either USB-C or Lightning devices that doesn’t need any extra cables. That’s because the super-slim receiver plugs directly into a phone. It comes with two tiny, lightweight transmitters with integrated clips and magnetic attachments that are easy to fit to your subjects. The built-in mics have an omnidirectional pickup pattern and are housed in acoustic chambers built to capture clear vocals while cutting out wind noise. The kit comes with a charging cable and pair of clip-on furry windshields to fend off blustery conditions. The system uses Rode’s intelligent Gain Assist technology to automatically sort out gain levels so inexperienced users don’t have to mess around with technical details. There is a charging case small enough to keep in a pocket, which delivers two full recharges for up to 21 hours of battery life. The mics feature automatic pairing to each other and the receiver, and these will work with Rode’s free iOS app called Rode Capture. They come in black or white versions for £134/$149. rode.com
