AWARDS MPB FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR

OPEN SHOWCASE YOUR MASTERPIECE

This category is for anything and everything! It spans narrative drama, long- or short-form films and even experimental work. If you have a personal project that deserves a bigger audience, we want to see it. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s paid-for, commissioned video, for charity or just a passion project. It can be all your own or something you worked on as the main filmmaker with a team of crew members – large or small. Every year, this class attracts loads of fantastic entries from a wide range of subjects. Many submissions show filmmakers really having fun and experimenting without the pressure of a client looking over their shoulder. Last year’s winner, Mark Forbes, sent in his 90-minute film chronicling the adventures of Tristan, a fashion maker and filmmaker living in London. It’s an intimate portrait of a charismatic character – well shot and edited – which engages with the subject and his unique life. The style is a combination of traditional fly-on-the-wall documentary and talking-head interviews, plus creative lighting and well-executed audio. It’s an epic piece of artistic work. So show us your best!

YOUTUBER THE FASTEST-GROWING VIDEO PLATFORM

The best YouTubers create engaging, well-shot and well- produced content for their own or a client’s channels. And while being a YouTuber is considered one of the most aspirational jobs, according to research on Generation Z, it’s still a growing market. YouTube might dominate when it comes to delivering video content, but if your work is displayed on Vimeo or any other long-form sharing platform, that’s also fine by us. This isn’t about numbers of views or subscribers, but creative work that’s clearly made for the intended market and looks professionally produced. It could be an online series or one-off film for yourself or your clients, or perhaps a personal or commercial vlog. If you’re any good at making videos for YouTube, why not share that with your fellow professionals?

AERIAL THE VIEW FROM UP HIGH Whether aerial camerawork is the sole content of your film or just an element of it, then this is the award class for you. From normal drones to FPV, shooting incredible shots that are impossible any other way, we want a piece of the action. Savvy filmmakers know that footage from drones, pole cams, helicopters or planes can add masses to a production. But they must be done right – and safely – within the law. We aim to celebrate those who know it’s not as simple as putting a drone up for an establishing shot. For the most incredible work, time and expertise are needed. Last year’s winner was Jeremy Levis of Montelupo Films. His drone work captured stunning locations, evocatively washed in wonderful light.
