DOCUMENTARY COMPELLING STORYTELLING WITH VISUAL STYLE The art of the documentary is a combination of an incredible story told in a compelling way, and this is always one of the most popular categories in the awards. It’s the place where storytelling with high-quality audio and visuals join together to make something simply unmissable. It’s where all the world is your stage, and your task is to share true stories from real people that deserve to be seen and heard. It could be a hard-hitting story of social importance or a geopolitical situation. The best documentaries entertain and inform – raising awareness to the wider world – and have often been a catalyst for real change. But that’s not the only sort of documentary – they can focus on local issues, incredible life stories of unknowns that deserve to be told, narratives of artisans, athletes or those who have faced many personal challenges. It’s all about stories told well, with huge contributions from the visuals. Last year’s winner was a stylish film exploring how hip-hop saved the lives of six young men from the streets of Dallas, who formed a group called The Rockets back in the eighties. This was four young dance music fans and a rapper named Trey – better known now as The DOC. He went on to launch Death Row records with Dr Dre, and was awarded a Grammy lifetime achievement award as a member of rap superstars NWA. Hip Hop Saved My Life – The Rockets was director Kermit Evans’ first short film, and mixes present-day interviews with some historic footage from decades ago, as well as featuring loads of cool music – naturally.
