CAN’T HOLD US BACK CineArray specialises in designing bespoke multicamera arrays for complex production needs and environments
The 3+1 is one of several helicopter based arrays in CineArray’s portfolio. The system can be changed into a five- camera RED V-RAPTOR 8K array – this offers an exceptionally wide field of view, providing up to 235° horizontally and 90° vertically within a single package ideal for high-quality, ultra-wide plate capture in consistent lighting conditions. While on site the K1 array can be changed between set-ups in less than one hour! For locations requiring comprehensive environmental coverage, CineArray also offers 360° arrays in configurations of six, eight or even 12 cameras depending on what is needed. They can be mounted on a car, boat or underslung on a helicopter! While a substantial payload, it provides uninterrupted landscapes with significant creative and technical benefits. Recognising that virtual production is never a one-size-fits-all solution, CineArray designs and builds all of its arrays in house, so camera and lens configurations can be tailored precisely to a production’s requirements. Both portrait and landscape array formats are available, using any of the major camera systems – RED, ARRI, Sony and more – ensuring maximum flexibility across a wide range of projects and platforms. All CineArray multicamera array systems integrate with the company’s LiveStitch dailies monitoring technology. LiveStitch provides a real-time, stitched preview on set, while simultaneously recording to removable SSDs for immediate review. Each individual camera feed is also recorded with full metadata, enabling directors and VFX supervisors to review both stitched and single camera footage as soon as the cameras cut, eliminating delays
associated with ingesting and processing large volumes of data. LiveStitch feeds can be viewed remotely from anywhere, allowing productions to reduce on- set crew size while lowering costs and minimising environmental impact. CineArray has recently introduced a new wireless LiveStitch system – another industry first. Traditionally, LiveStitch could only be viewed if an array was rigged to a large vehicle such as a car or boat. The wireless LiveStitch system allows stitched monitoring from any platform such as drones, motorcycles and even from a handheld system – something that has not been possible before. The processing happens away from the array rig, reducing the amount of equipment directly needed, providing directors, DOPs and VFX teams with a stitched feed regardless of the size of the array platform. CineArray has had the privilege of travelling all over the world providing their array service, sometimes in challenging environments. We were asked for a nine-camera, 360° array for a shoot that needed to be rigged onto a speedboat and filmed exclusively out on the water. Always up for the challenge, CineArray sprung into action and worked to identify any potential risks to the equipment or footage. The array had to be stabilised so we contacted our friends at Camera
Revolution to provide a Libra Head that would then be fixed to a Panther Arm for additional stabilisation and used with the gimbal to reduce impact on the Libra Head and ensure smooth, effective plates while on open water. Of course, the main issue to tackle was protecting all the equipment from water and salt, and not to impact the footage. Prodigy air units were added to the cameras to keep lenses dry, waterproofing was added around the electronics and equipment was cleaned regularly. It was an amazing experience and we can’t wait to get back out on the water. With a relentless focus on innovation, in-house engineering and practical, on- set solutions, CineArray is at the pinnacle of multicamera array design and image capture support technology. By developing bespoke systems that combine creative flexibility with technical precision, many of them world firsts, CineArray offers capabilities that simply aren’t available elsewhere. This unique approach lets productions capture more, faster and with greater confidence, reinforcing CineArray’s position as a leader in shaping the future of VFX plate capture technology – in the air, on land and at sea.
