Out of town IT’S NOT JUST CAMBRIDGE THAT’S ABUZZ WITH EVENTS THIS MONTH. WE TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT’S HAPPENING A LITTLE FURTHER AFIELD WHAT’S ON
BISHOP’S STORTFORD Bishop’s Stortford has an intriguing selection of shows coming up this month, with venue South Mill Arts proving itself to be a consistent source of eclectic entertainment. There’s everything in September from live music to museum talks, as well as key cinema and community events to jot down in your diary. But the real highlights come in the shape of live performances at the bandstand in Sworder’s Field. The first, on 4 September, will showcase the talents of the local Ukulele Society, and popular band The Muggabees will take to the stage a day later. The town also has its own monthly craft and farmers’ market, on 2 September. NORTHSTOWE Elsewhere, on Sunday 5 September, the Northstowe Festival of Running aims to raise funds to support Northstowe’s local schools. You can take part in whatever distance suits you, and there’s no pressure to run the whole way. The Family Mile is a great way to get out and about with the kids, or you can go a bit further and try the 5K Fun Run, or even 10K route. For those alarmed by the prospect of having to run, you can still head along to Northstowe to support the participants; races will be starting at Western Park, and further checkpoints include Pioneer Park, the waterpark and Kingfisher Pond. A virtual run is also available for those who can’t physically make the race, but still want to help raise funds. All details are available on the website.
THE BEAT GOES ON Catch some live music in nearby Stortford
BURWELL Burwell is really coming through this month, with a jam-packed day of carnival-style celebrations on 4 September, courtesy of the Family Day Festival. Running from 2pm-10pm, you can look forward to live music from local bands – including JeZO, The 55, and The Compressors – as well as street food vendors, a sweet stall, bottle stall and plenty of traditional market stands. There’s also a licensed bar on site, and you can bring your own chairs and picnic blankets to set yourself up for the day.
ELY Similarly, over in our sister city Ely, the long-established local markets are in full swing. If you time your weekend visit right, you’ll catch the craft, food and vintage markets on the Saturday. Alternatively, go for the classic Sunday market, which is joined twice-monthly by the farmers’ market. Whatever you’re looking for – whether it’s a spot of street food, a unique gift for a loved one, or souvenir to scoop up for yourself – Ely is home to some of the best markets in the region, so you definitely won’t be disappointed.
