LIGHTING LED FUTURE

not scale well when trying to control huge amounts of pixels. Def: Is the lack of colour matching between manufacturers LED lighting becoming a problem? BB, Litepanels: As the top performing LED lighting providers calibrate their products to either a full- or broad-spectrum standard, colour matching will become less of an issue. Manufacturers should strive for full spectrum performance rather than aim to match other manufacturers, because this will move all LED lighting toward a common, reliable standard. Rendering accurate colours is perhaps the most important goal for lighting professionals and staying true to the foundation of full-spectrum lighting is one of Litepanels’ primary goals. DW, Dedo Weigert Film: That indeed is still a problem with many of the phosphor- based LEDs, because the mix of the phosphor is still not easy to control. That’s why the binning has been a method to identify colour coordinates. This is why we put the bin numbers on each and every one of our light fixtures, so that a match could be found if somebody already has some lights and wants to get some more. We are refining this method

create reflections on hero cars on set. But these lights are intended to provide an image on camera. Cineo’s new lights all support zonal colour that can mimic effects like water reflections, cop cars, fire… But this can be done in a ten-zone fixture and does not require the added cost and data of a true video light engine. I think the simplicity, quality of light and reduced cost of high power LED stage lights means they will coexist off camera for the foreseeable future with more and more LED panels being used on camera in place of green screen. KK, Digital Sputnik: Voyagers are shipping now and we see a tremendous excitement about pixel mapping in the market. The key to widespread adoption is having an intuitive and scalable user interface to deal with massive amounts of pixels. DMX does

RP, Cineo Lighting: This is an interesting question for me in particular, as we developed and deployed raster- mapped lighting fixtures in my previous company, Element Labs. The integration of lighting-as-video, or video-as-lighting has been around for well over ten years, and I see a tighter integration between the two over the next few years. CE, Cineo Lighting: This technology exists today in the form of LED panels. But it is largely a cost and need issue. At Cineo we see it like this. There are ‘off-camera’ lights that are illuminating the talent and set. Their job is to provide accurate high quality light at any desired CCT and colour. Then there are ‘on camera’ or ‘reflected on camera’ lights. These can be LED panels that act as a background or enhanced environment, or specific panels that
