MOTHER ’ S DAY
THE WORD DELIGHTFUL DAYS OUT AND PERFECT PRESSIES FOR MOTHER’S DAY
CHOCOLATE MAKING
SUNDAY ROAST Overlooking the majestic King’s College Chapel, The Cambridge Chop House is the go-to destination for a top-notch roast. Its underground cellars offer bags of charm, with vaulted ceilings and cosy candlelit nooks. There’s some real crowd-pleasers on the menu, including the Chophouse Grazing Plate, which comes loaded with haggis fritters, brie bites, cerrunos ham, pork crackling and potted smoked haddock. Mains include steaks, hearty pies and a sumptuous Sunday roast.
One for the cocoa-crazy mums – a chocolate making course from Chocolat Chocolat basically sets you up with the skills to become an amateur chocolatier. During the two- hour class, you’ll sample a selection of high-quality blended- and single- origin chocolates, learning to identify distinctive flavours and figure out your favourites. You will then be taught how to make truffles using artisan methods, which you can take home with you (if they survive that long!).
SPA DAY Our mums deserve to be pampered, and where better to switch off and relax than at the gorgeous Gresham House Wellness? Tucked away in the grounds of the Gonville Hotel, the restored Victorian villa boasts stylish floral interiors and is packed with period charm. There’s a wide range of ESPA treatments to choose from, including facials, immersive massages, body wraps and manicures. Gift vouchers can be used for any treatment and come presented in a beautiful gift box. AFTERNOON TEA Set in a leafy orchard in Grantchester, The Orchard Tea Garden offers a tranquil setting in which to enjoy a ‘Rupert Brooke’ afternoon tea, with finger sandwiches, mini desserts and fresh scones. There are lots of walks around this charming village, including riverside routes through Grantchester Meadows or Byron’s Pool, where the famed poet used to take a dip as a student.
GIN CLASS A bottle of gin makes for a great Mother’s Day present – but why not take it one step further with an immersive experience at the Cambridge Gin Laboratory? This multifaceted Green Street store offers a variety of classes, from tasting sessions to cocktail making, with plenty of opportunities to try the innovative distillery’s award-winning tipples. When opting for the ‘Make It!’ class, you even get to create a bespoke gin, tailored to your tastes – hopefully ending up with something that’s more mother’s reward than mother’s ruin!
