GEAR OF THE YEAR

LENSES Every great shot begins with amazing optics. The right lens doesn’t just capture a scene, but creates it. It shapes your story, sets the mood and brings your vision to life. That’s why lenses and the clever kit that complements them are always a highlight of Pro Moviemaker ’s GOTY. This year’s zoom lens nominees are as diverse as today’s filmmaking landscape. Canon headlines with the ultra-useful RF 24-105mm f/2.8L and cinema- ready CN-E 20-50mm T2.4, both packed with features for cinematic results. Fujifilm’s XF16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II is a weatherproof warrior, while Laowa’s Ranger 28- 75mm T2.9 brings cinema style to a lower budget. Nikon’s 28-135mm f/4 PZ is a power zoom dream for gimbal use and marks the brand getting serious about cinema. Tamron’s 35-150mm f/2-2.8 has become a filmmaker’s secret weapon, while Sigma’s nominees – from the versatile 16-300mm to the insanely good 300-600mm f/4 Sports superzoom we tested recently – proves it’s still a lens powerhouse offering glass that no other brand can match. Sony’s 28-70mm f/2 GM is small and mightily fast, and the 400-800mm f/6.3-8 G zooms in on the booming world of wildlife filmmaking, but is great for sports too. The Zeiss LWZ.3 is still a go-to for serious shooters recording on Super 35. Among primes, there’s plenty to love too. Canon’s RF 20mm f/1.4

L VCM delivers wide-angle wow, while two of the biggest names in lenses make their mark for smaller cameras. That’s Cooke with its SP.3 primes and Zeiss with its rival Nano set which bring full-frame cine magic. Add in Irix’s super- bright 65mm cine lens, Tokina’s Vista glass, Laowa’s Nanomorph LF Anamorphic, plus big hitters like the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 Art or the newly mirrorless Zeiss Otus, and you’re spoilt for choice. Great glass deserves to be paired with great accessories. Nominees include slick prompters such as the Autocue Explorer 17in, Desview T12 and Zeeprompt ZP12, with creative tools like the Magic Video Box and Voxbox Air for down-the-lens interview flair. Your lens game will reach new heights with top- tier filters from Tiffen, Polar Pro, Formatt-Hitech and Schneider – and a pro follow focus from Vocas. If any of these beauties helped you nail a perfect shot, it’s time to show some love. Cast your vote to honour these unsung heroes.
