Taking in the arts affron Walden is home to a great selection of galleries and gardens for you to enjoy and soak up, so be sure to get your culture fix

while in town.

Situated at the top of the high street, The Saffron Walden Gallery offers visitors an eclectic mix of contemporary art, including paintings, sculptures and ceramics. It’s a lovely, light and tranquil space, currently playing host to a group exhibition, featuring works from over 20 artists – including recent Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year wildcard winner, Susan Isaac. Ranging from 20th-century works through to present-day pieces, the collection is eclectic and intriguing, and the gallery is run entirely by volunteers. Just down the road is Audley End Miniature Railway . From 17 July to 5 September, catch the summer festival event that’s jam-packed with activities. Enjoy a ride on a steam train through Audley End Estate’s beautiful woodland; explore the enchanted natural surroundings and adventure play area – a great destination for the whole family. The stunning state rooms, decorated in the Jacobean style, are all open for your perusal, and the award-winning gardens include acres of expansive parkland and glorious green spaces – ideal for a leisurely stroll to take in the grandeur of the place. Booking is essential, so do so via the English Heritage website. english-heritage.org.uk Last, but not least, make sure to pay Bridge End Garden a visit while in Saffron Walden. Open all year and free to enter, the garden is a welcome escape from the lively buzz of the town, making for a relaxing break during your trip.
