MARY KAY DONOVAN: I think expectations. We were in Qatar for the Men’s World Cup not even a year earlier, but some facilities and services afforded the men’s tournament weren’t offered for coverage of the women due to budget restrictions. The time difference was also difficult for our US scheduling. HELEN CAMPBELL: Working with an entirely new crew with a new virtual studio. Those first few days communicating, rehearsing and trusting a new team was vital so we could deliver a seamless production of the highest quality. The team were working long hours, often at unsociable times of the day, so to keep the morale high was sometimes tough, especially when there were often two or three matches per day. CAROLINE RAMSAY: Two World Cups in less than a year. Short lead times. Worldwide freight delays. Scaling up to ten venues. Two countries, nine host cities, with vast distances between them. Irregular kick-off times across four time zones. Delivering a game changing remote solution to our client. So plenty! SARAH BUTLER: A rather amusing (now, but not at the time!) moment was when I met Gabby Logan at the stadium entrance and asked her if she wanted to check out the studio or go to the cabin for hair and make-up, to which Gabby FEED: What were the challenges?
stopped and told me what I already knew, that she had been in hair and make-up for the last hour. I meant where the hair and make- up team is, but the rather nervous introduction had made me fumble on my words, and what was meant to be a simple introduction felt like this was going to be my biggest challenge. Yup, I had asked the legendary figure that is Gabby Logan if she wanted to go and get her hair and make-up done. Thankfully, what I thought was going to be the biggest challenge of my career so far was eased instantly by a simple smile from Gabby and, when I repeated the story to Fara Williams (who found it highly amusing), I felt a wall lowered. Sometimes what you think are the biggest challenges, and the moments where you step outside your comfort zone, are the moments that allow you to grow and challenge yourself. ERIN LASTÉ: The operation ran smoothly for the most part, but on occasion our data partners would lose tracking data, which meant that we had to mitigate risk of incorrect stats playing out by avoiding any data that could be affected. As we work live there are times where certain information isn’t available immediately, therefore the challenge here is to ensure we are able to provide information that is correct and timely, while communicating the availability of our package to the relevant parties.
