SHRINKING SUBSCRIPTIONS

The Verge | It’s Time to Rethink Our Relationships with Streaming Services

How many streaming services is too many? In the UK, the streaming market saw major change in 2022. In the first quarter, the number of households with at least one streaming subscription fell by 215,000 – a hit that was taken by Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+, to name a few. Later, in the fourth quarter, this number rose by 55,000, back up to 16.24 million households with at least one subscription. As of January 2023, 56% of UK households subscribed to at least one streaming service, though many have two or more. Apple TV+, Prime Video and Paramount+ saw the most growth, with Apple TV+ beating Netflix and Disney+ on subscriber satisfaction (based on perceived quality of available shows). That said, the two most-watched shows in late 2022 were Wednesday and The Crown – both Netflix originals.

As of Q4 2022, 12% of consumers planned to cancel at least one streaming service, signalling another significant cutback in the wake of the UK’s cost-of- living crisis. Whether it’s streaming, cable or something else entirely, video content must become indispensable to survive these slim-downs.
