TENBA DNA 13 DSLR MESSENGER BAG £140/$180 uk.tenba.com
Everyone needs a small messenger bag for those super-stealthy shoots where you want to blend in rather than stand out as a filmmaker carrying loads of kit. Tenba’s DNA 13 DSLR Messenger Bag fits the bill. It looks stylish enough to be a cool, urban carry-all, but has lots of features to make it useful for hauling smaller cameras and gear around in comfort.
It is designed to fit a mirrorless or DSLR camera with up to five lenses including a 70-200mm f/2.8, plus accessories along with a laptop up to 13 inches and a tablet up to 11 inches (such as the iPad 11 Pro). That’s a tad optimistic, unless you use the smallest camera and prime lenses and don’t mind stuffing it to the brim. More realistically, it is more suitable and protective for a full-frame mirrorless with a cage on it, two AF lenses, a mic and small monitor or LED panel. You can even put your batteries and cards inside and a super-compact tripod in the stretchy pocket at the side. The top of the bag has a large zip for fast access, or you can unlatch the flap via its magnetic sliding catches, then fold it back for more room. The catches may take some getting used to. Tenba has designed the hook- and-loop fasteners to be as silent as possible thanks to the Whisper Hook quiet closure, and it really does work. Ideal for quiet locations, you pull straight down on the flap before pulling away from the bag. The bag comes with a rain cover which is easy to stretch over the bag to fend off the worst of the weather. The base of the Tenba bag is waterproof with a special coating and all the seams are sealed on the bottom
3.8cm/1.5in. So you can put the bag down on any wet surface, even for extended periods of time, without worry of nasty seepage. Inside is a padded insert you can take out, using the DNA 13 as a general-purpose everyday bag. The rear sleeve remains so you can still carry a laptop and tablet. Employing the bag as a camera case allows for easy access and the interior padding is very protective. Stuffed full of kit, it gets heavy, but the carry strap is well padded to help take the strain. This has a silicone coating to keep it from slipping off your shoulder. As a stealthy bag for a small set-up, it’s well-built and practical. It can even be an everyday workhorse, too; a value buy that should last for years. PRO MOVIEMAKER RATING: 8/10 A stylish, comfortable messenger bag Pros: Stealthy, decent padding Cons: The bag is not big enough for a full video kit
