CALIBRITE DISPLAY PLUS HL £299/$339 calibrite.com
If you don’t regularly calibrate your monitor to make sure it’s showing accurate colours, then the journey to natural, neutral footage or funky, cool grades will always be a nightmare. The colours your screen shows change over time, so it’s important to check your monitor regularly. It is best to have a device that’s quick to use, or else it’s too easy to put off the job. With more filmmakers being asked for HDR or HLG footage, you need to have the right spec calibration device, too. It’s also important to have a tool that works for today’s super-bright monitors such as OLED and mini-LED, Apple XDR panels, white LED, plasma, RGB LED, PFS Phosphor and wide- gamut displays. The new Calibrite Display Plus HL handles all those types of screens, as well as laptops, monitor/recorders and even projectors. As it is powered by X-Rite, which has been one of the leaders in colour for decades, you know it’s going to be accurate – and that it is. “Calibrite’s Display Plus HL measures displays all the way up to a staggeringly bright 10,000 nits”

Calibrite’s new Display Plus HL and lower-spec Display Pro HL have high-luminance sensors, with the Plus model we tested measuring displays all the way up to 10,000 nits, while the Pro goes up to 3000 nits. Calibrite also offers the Display SL for standard dynamic range monitors, measuring up to 1000 nits. The Display Plus HL allows editors to see deep into shadow areas on the latest displays. It covers broadcast video standards of NTSC, PAL SECAM and ITU-R Rec. 709, as well as BT. 1886 tone curve for Rec. 2020 – the standard for HDTV. We tested the Plus HL on a couple of 600-nit 5K Apple Studio Display monitors and a 1600-nit Apple Macbook Pro, which is far less than the device is capable of.
The device comes in a storage pouch and has a USB-C connection, ideal for most modern computers, but comes with a USB-A adapter for legacy devices. To use, just wait around half an hour for your monitor to warm up then plug in the device. Download the latest Calibrite Profiler software, which is said to be around 30% faster than the previous software. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and you’re set. You are told to swivel the cover off the monitor lens to the rear of the device. This is an ambient light detector that affects the calibration process. The Display Plus HL is then hung over the screen and held in place with a counterweight on the cable at the rear. The puck is positioned on its target and the software then projects a series of colours and tones. To create a custom preset setting for your device, select one of the basics – such as Video, Photo or Pre-Press – and follow the basic or advanced settings. The basic mode is more than enough for the vast majority of users, but if you are an advanced colour expert then you can take precise control of White Point, Luminance, Contrast Ratio and Gamma. In just a few minutes, the screen is perfectly calibrated. It is fast, simple and an essential bit of kit that could help create consistency in your films.
