KITTED UP The Molus G200 head is

having 300W is fantastic as you can use the light with much larger modifiers than you’d have thought possible. We tried it with Zhiyun’s new Parabolic Softbox 90D, which is around 90cm/36in in diameter and costs an incredibly reasonable £149/$149. For this you get the pre-assembled softbox speedring with 16 ribs and the outer cover, plus two diffuser cloths. So you can use just one for brighter, punchier light or add the second inside for a smoother, softer look. It also comes with a fabric grid to stop excess spill – all inside a useful carrying bag. As it uses quick-release ribs in an aluminium speedring, it’s very fast to set up and take down. At just 2kg/4.4lb, it also is very light for such a large modifier so is easier to rig up, and works perfectly with the lightweight Molus G200. You can get away with lighter light stands than you could with pretty much any other 200W COB light and 90cm parabolic softbox combo. The light output is even and soft. Adding the second does smooth things out, but cuts the power down. With a maximum 300W on tap, that is hardly an issue, though. With the Molus G200 and the Parabolic Softbox 90D, you have a total spend of £518/$528, and that will buy you a versatile, powerful and compact lighting set-up – definitely a bargain in anyone’s book. PRO MOVIEMAKER RATING: 9/10 Small yet powerful COB light that’s simple to use Pros: Bright and inexpensive Cons: No battery option

separate to the control unit. A decent reflector is also included

where you want it – often lower than the light – so you can see and change settings easily without having to dig into an app. You can also keep this unit away from the talent, so there is less chance of fan noise interrupting audio. The Molus G200 pack has a built-in strap to hand from a stand, too. In use, the light is consistent and the Zhiyun reflector works well with a decent but controlled spread. And

While many COB lights are monobloc-style, with the head and power unit in one combined fixture, there are definite advantages of the head and power/controls being split and joined by a cable. It makes the head much smaller and lighter, so it’s easier to fix onto modifiers and there is a lot less weight swinging around at the top of a light stand. Also, it’s much more convenient to put the control unit

TAKE A REST Assembling the softbox is easy, as each of the ribs clicks into place nicely
