GEAR OF THE YEAR

As one of the most popular programs on the planet, the winner of the Editor’s Choice for editing software is Adobe Premiere Pro CC. This is the go-to application for many working videographers, and integrates perfectly with the likes of Photoshop and After Effects, as well as cloud workflows such as Frame.io. As part of Adobe’s subscription service called Creative Suite, there’s a constant stream of new features that come at no extra cost. And the NLE updates regularly to be compatible with files from even the latest cameras. EDITOR’S CHOICE: ADOBE PREMIERE PRO CC

Editing software Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 18 Studio

voted the victor as it is incredibly quick, withstands drops and the worst of the weather – plus it comes in a 4TB size. That’s easily enough for even the most trigger-happy filmmaker to store a day’s shoot or often much more. The T7 Shield is small and light, with a tough aluminium body covered with a rugged rubber coating to protect it from knocks and bumps. It’s also one of the most rapid SSDs we have ever tested, especially when used on a Mac with Thunderbolt connections. Non-linear editing software is crucial to all indie filmmakers, and coming out on top in this category is Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 18 Studio. For a lot of users, the basic version is ideal since it’s free, and offers the vast majority of functionality that many need. Resolve is fast becoming the go-to software for colour correction and grading, and is tailor-made for changing Raw files into edit-ready rushes. Not only that, but it is also a powerful NLE in its own right, with upgrades on a regular basis. And the latest Resolve 18 offers connection to the Blackmagic Cloud Store to help collaborative editing in real time. But the winner is the Studio version, which unlocks all the capabilities of the software for a modest amount of money. The free version can export up to 4K UHD at up to 60fps while the Studio version can do up to 32K at 120fps with advanced HDR delivery. It can also play formats such as AVCHD, AVC-Intra and 10-bit formats like the high-quality H.264 10-bit 422. With its incredible colour grading, Fairlight audio components and easy streaming, it’s a popular choice.
