AGENDA Nikon’s 600mm prime is lightest yet

FAST ZOOM GIVES E-MOUNT USERS A CHOICE Filmmakers wedded to Sony E-mount have been stuck with its own-brand 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lenses – far from budget options. Now Sigma has taken the wraps off its own version from the Sports range of fast lenses. The 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS has a built-in High-response Linear Actuator for fast, quiet and accurate AF. The optical stabiliser features Sigma’s unique OS2 algorithm, allowing the lens to be used in low- light conditions – even handheld. The zoom is weather resistant and has a manual aperture ring, AF/ MF button on the barrel and a tripod foot. No price has yet been set, but it is likely to undercut Sony’s latest G Master offering. The lens will also be available in L-Mount when it hits the market in December. It means Sigma’s ‘holy trinity’ of fast zooms is now complete, as the telezoom joins the 14-24mm and 24-70mm f/2.8. Sigma also unveiled the 10-18mm f/2.8 lens to fit Sony E, Leica L and Fujifilm X, costing £600/$599. It’s part of the Contemporary range and is for cameras with an APS-C crop, covering an effective focal range of 15-27mm (35mm equivalent). It comes with a newly developed, push-on petal-type lens hood and features a unique aspherical element that reduces overall size and enhances image quality. With a weight of 260g, a fast AF stepping motor and minimal focus breathing, the lens is ideal on a motorised gimbal. sigma-imaging-uk.com

The Nikon Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S full-frame prime is the lightest super-telephoto to fit Z mount as it weighs just 1470g/3.24lb with tripod collar. It’s far cheaper than the heavier and faster £15,499/$15,497 600mm f/4 but still costs £4999/$4797. The lens is smaller and lighter thanks to Phase Fresnel lens technology which Nikon has used in several lenses over the past few years. This cuts the maximum aperture compared to a standard super-telephoto. It offers up to a claimed six stops of Vibration Reduction image stabilisation. And high-performance sealing ensures it’s ready for harsh environments and uncertain weather. For more reach, the lens can be used with a Nikon teleconverter with little loss of resolution. SR and ED elements control aberrations and colour fringing, while the Nano Crystal Coat counters ghosting and flare. Functions can be assigned to the L-Fn buttons and silent control ring. A memory-set button allows instant recall of focus positions. nikon.co.uk
