TallyMan facilitates the control of both switcher and multiviewer contributions, with ad hoc single- source selection and salvo recall. On top of the nine studio cameras across the business’ three spaces, there are ten PTZ cameras tallied over Ethernet, with the ability to extend functionality to full PTZ control and preset recall using TMVP. STREAMLINED CONTROL The facility features switcher contribution control, where a TallyMan interacts with a Ross Ultrix router feeding both switchers. “We wanted to be able to fire a macro – with, say, a group of cross-points to a switcher, to recall a specific scenario or programme – making it possible to have all camera feeds in the switcher at the same time,” explains TSL broadcast solutions engineer Benjamin Bate. “The idea was to streamline control and consolidate key studio functionalities to a single panel. The technical director or senior producer can then make decisions about how to set up with the operators for each show,” he continues. “We essentially have a TMVP in both control rooms. Each of these panels has command of the KVMs, studio-to-control-room assignments, camera-to-studio assignments and camera preset/recall selection for Disguise/White Light. “TMVP is a centralised and consolidated three-panel touchscreen interface that’s employed by the team to assign control rooms to studios for their programming. This gives them a single location from which to manage a whole host of different things – the ability to control not only multiple devices, but also their studio assignments from important central locations,” Bate clarifies.

TallyMan grew out of UMD, but has become a smart automation platform, as well as control layer. Users can establish production presets to trigger actions from multiple pieces of equipment with a single key press. Logic trapping ensures all elements of a path are established before it’s taken to air – helping to eliminate operational errors, while providing simple access to complex actions. where control surfaces are built on the modern generation of touchscreen PCs. These allow context- aware screen layouts, presenting precisely the right controls at any time. “It has compressed a lot of functionality into a small area that’s nicely laid out and easy to use. TMVP streamlined the operation with a cost-effective solution, making it easier for both engineers and operators to manage,” Bate concludes.
