Feel right at home Barley Manor is a new care home with a difference – elegant decor, friendly staff and a warm welcome for all E stablished in 2010, Porthaven is an independent care home provider with 21 properties across England. Its newest home is Barley Manor in Great Shelford. Here, you’ll find thoughtfully designed interiors created with residents’ needs in mind: secure, landscaped gardens; a packed programme of weekly activities; minibus trips; specialist dementia care; and an exceptional team of care staff who are passionate about the work they do. “The overriding ethos of Porthaven is to maintain a warm, homely and non- institutional environment,” says home manager Narcis Militaru. “Barley Manor offers three main types of care – residential, dementia and nursing. And, perhaps most importantly at Christmas, it also offers respite care. Quite often people will come and stay with us when family members go away over the holidays.”

to travel between floors. Every private bedroom is individually decorated and residents can bring their own furniture to make the space feel more homely. Every resident also has their own en-suite wet room for showering. “Older people and their families tend to choose residential care when life at home gets lonely or the chores of daily living become too difficult to manage,” adds Narcis. “Our approach is to improve our residents’ quality of life by creating lovely, comfortable surroundings and planning care, activities and other services around their needs and wishes.” Nursing care bedrooms are designed with practical features such as call bells and full wheelchair accessibility, but are comfortable too. “We’re a care home, not a hospital or institution,” says Narcis. “That’s why all our nursing residents have large, private bedrooms with en-suite wet rooms, televisions, telephone and internet access, allowing our residents to keep in touch with their families and the outside world.” Barley Manor offers 24-hour specialist care for residents living with dementia. “Our care staff understand different types of dementia well. Whether experiencing memory loss, communication difficulties, falls or behavioural changes, we gently accompany our residents on their journeys, encouraging, supporting and reassuring them at all times.”

Porthaven has a special focus on tackling loneliness at this time of year by providing a place for people to come and be looked after fully by its specialist team. “Short-term respite provides an opportunity to trial a care home stay,” says Narcis. “Many who visit decide they don’t want to leave. It can give wonderful peace of mind from the family’s perspective.” Fun activities A typical day at Barley Manor involves any number of fun activities – flower arranging, cinema screenings, personal training at the well-equipped gym, card games or chess in the games room, reading in the library or baking in the activities room. There’s a dining room on every floor, as well as private dining facilities for family bookings to celebrate birthdays or Christmas. The cafe acts as a hub where residents can pop down and read the newspaper over coffee and pastries. There is easy, safe wheelchair access throughout the building, with lifts
