Verdict “When we put the Leitz THALIA lenses on the camera I saw the best parts of what I saw with the Summilux-C lenses, but on a more epic scale.” DOP Tim Ives. lenses with the ARRI Alexa 65 camera in the upcoming movie out on 16 November – Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. DOP Tim Ives is also using them in Stranger Things , season three on Netflix, due out in 2019. THALIA prime lenses offer a consistent cinematic look and feel throughout the range of nine lenses from 24mm to 180mm for full-frame, VistaVision or Super 35. The large image circle covers sensors up to the ARRI ALEXA 65, but can be used to create equally stunning images on full- frame, VistaVision and Super 35 sensors, and film stocks as well. Images captured with the THALIA lenses can appear to have an added depth and dimensionality, especially on larger sensors, due to a gradual focus fall-off curve. Rather than even, flat layers of focus across the frame, these lenses have a sharp and focused centre with gradual fall- off of contrast and light towards the edges, leading the viewer to the image centre. Maintaining a circular iris throughout all aperture stops, the lens design creates a cinematic bokeh. While the THALIA lenses are not technically vintage lenses, they do offer many of the image characteristics that have driven cinematographers to pair older lenses with digital sensors. They are clear without being overly sharp, and focus is smooth and forgiving without looking soft. Skin tones are natural and even with accurate colour rendition. One movie franchise is using THALIA
Verdict News from Fujinon, though: “Fujinon is closely monitoring the full-frame market and plans to have something to announce in 2019.” Super 35 to full-frame, the angular field of view of the lens used on a Super 35 sensor does not change when the expander is used on a full-frame sensor. There is a 1.5 stop reduction in light transmittance. In these Gear Group articles we like to have a left field option and here it is from Fujifilm. Fujifilm Corporation has been working closely with Musashi Optical System Co Ltd to produce the OptMag TL-OMFF – an optical adaptor that enables the use of Super 35 format PL-Mount lenses on full-frame sensor cameras without vignetting. The OptMag TL-OMFF expands the image from the Fujinon Premier and Cabrio PL-Mount Super 35 lenses onto a 46.3mm diagonal image size – large enough to cover all of the latest larger sensor cameras, such as the Sony Venice, the RED Weapon, and the ARRI Alexa LF. Musashi-Opt’s design team worked very closely with Fujinon’s optical engineers to ensure that the lens’ look was not affected by the use of the adaptor and that the same colour rendition, clarity, and contrast was maintained. Renowned for their incredibly high performance, likened to many top-end prime lenses, even when the image is expanded by 1.7x, distortion and aberrations are still minimal, providing cinematographers with all the quality they have come to expect from Fujinon cine zoom lenses on their full-frame camera productions. Verdict It’s obvious that Panavision is more than ready for the large-format era with more lenses, like the H series, coming out all the time. Story ); Ultra Vista – 1.6x anamorphic squeeze; Primo 70 ( Guardians of the Galaxy 2 , Spectre ); Artiste; Vintage 65; H Series; PanaSpeed; Sphero 65 ( Ghost in the Shell , Assassin’s Creed ); Super Panavision 70 ( Lawrence of Arabia , Assassin’s Creed ); System 65 ( Far and Away , Doctor Strange ); and Panavision Anamorphic lenses – 2x anamorphic squeeze ratio. As far as large-format cinematography is concerned Panavision has a huge series of lenses that cover the full image circle. A new example is the H series, so new that we haven’t yet seen a film it’s been used on. H Series is a traditionally designed spherical lens set with a glamorous, rounded, soft roll-off, giving a pleasing tonal quality to the skin. Created with true vintage glass and coatings, these lenses offer slightly elevated blacks for softer contrast. High speeds separate subject and background with a smooth edge transition, allowing the subject to appear naturally placed within the depth of the image. H series covers a 47mm diagonal sensor, making it compatible with DXL2, Alexa LF and Sony Venice large-format cameras. Productions recently shooting with the H series lenses are The Highwaymen , The First , Captain Marvel , Homecoming , Maleficent 2 , Velvet Buzzsaw , Bumblebee , Dolemite Is My Name , and The New Mutants . Other Panavision lenses which can be used by large-format sensors include the Ultra Panavision 70/Ultra Panatar – 1.3x anamorphic squeeze ratio ( Ben Hur, The Hateful Eight , Rogue One: A Star Wars
