London’s best-kept film industry secret Garden Studios, currently the only large-scale film studio in London, has marked its second birthday by opening a new 7700 sq ft sound stage. Lily 3, which opens in late January, is self- contained – with two dressing rooms, a green room and production space. For larger projects, it’s located next to Lily 1 – with over 10,000 sq ft of production offices, fitting rooms, dedicated costume areas and over 150 parking spaces. There are now four sound stages at Park Royal-based Garden Studios, totalling 48,000 sq ft. There’s one sound-treated stage totalling 11,733 sq ft, a virtual production stage at 4800 sq ft, three virtual production training stages and over 40,000 sq ft of untreated shoot space. “There is also an array of supporting spaces: offices, workshops, green rooms, hair and make-up rooms as well as private meeting pods overlooking the canal,” said Thomas Hoegh, CEO of Garden Studios. “We offer a flexible space that can work for a variety of TV and film productions. Our current footprint is over 300,000 sq ft – Garden Studios is the industry’s best-kept secret.”
Making Space Space Studios Manchester hopes to begin construction on a further 70,000 sq ft of production space, two 20,000 sq ft stages and 30,000 sq ft of ancillary space for workshops and production offices. The company secured planning in spring 2022 and has been working on further design plans and financing since then. Rob Page, Space Studios managing director, explained that the UK tax break and an ever-growing need for content from streaming services has meant demand for studio space in the UK is at an all-time high. “Having studios in Manchester has meant we can capitalise on that demand, providing jobs and opportunities to local businesses and people,” he said. “We’re excited to build on that growth and establish Space Studios as the home for high-end TV drama in the north-west.” Shows produced at Space Studios include BBC hit Peaky Blinders .
