GEAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS
AUDIO S uperb sound can make a video, so it’s essential to equip yourself with the right mics – plus all the extras. Our shortlist includes XLR mics like the Rode NTG5, Sennheiser MKE 600 and high-end MKH 416, plus two small models from Rycote. For DSLR-type microphones, the Canon DM-E1D and Sony ECM- B1M use multi-interface hotshoe technology to get rid of wires. But there’s also the Joby Wavo Pro and Sennheiser’s MKE 400 and MKE 200, while Rode has the new Videomic Go II and popular Videomic NTG. In the audio recorder/adapter category, 32-bit float technology is taking hold, with the Tascam Portacapture X8 and Zoom F3 proving very popular. Meanwhile, the latest Beachtek DXA-Max lets you use XLR mics on just about any camera, while the Panasonic DMW- XLR1E and Tascam CA-XLR2d do the same but offer brand-specific features for Lumix, Canon and Fujifilm cameras. Wireless mics up for a gong include the Deity Theos, Sennheiser EW-DP and Hollyland Lark M1.
