LENSES W hichever camera you use, it’s the choice of lens that really makes a big difference to the look of your work. Picking the right optic is crucial as they can give years of service – so it pays to buy wisely. From the latest AF zoom or super-telephoto for mirrorless, to cine primes, zooms and anamorphic glass, there are options at all price points. And many brands have made AF lenses suitable for filmmaking, with de-clickable iris and focus breathing compensation. Some of the most sought-after optics include Sony’s 50mm f/1.4 G Master prime and the FE 20-70mm f/4 G – a new, wider-angle standard zoom that’s perfect for the current vlogging generation. Tamron’s 35-150mm zoom – f/2 at the wide end, closing down to f/2.8 at the telephoto end – has found loads of fans; while Canon’s most recent AF zoom, the RF 100- 300mm f/2.8, set the world alight with its top spec and sky-high price.

The latest Fujifilm XF 18-120mm f/4 LM PZ WR is a powerzoom built for filming on the new X-H2S, X-H2 and X-T5 cameras. The evergreen Zeiss LWZ.3 21-100mm T2.9-3.9 continues to be a dream buy, as do the brand’s Supreme Primes. And Sigma’s 18-35mm T2 Cine is still in huge demand, along with the 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art and 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary primes. For anamorphic fans, the Sirui range is bolstered by the 35mm T2.9, while Schneider-Kreuznach’s Isco4all combines three spherical cine primes and an Iscorama anamorphic front adapter in order to give you the best of both worlds. We have also included a category for lens accessories. Filters like the Formatt-Hitech Black Supermist Circle Kit and Ultra Cine Superslim Filter Kit are nominated, as is the latest range of Schneider-Kreuznach NDs, while IB/E’s filters use natural materials for a very distinct look. Vocas has the popular MB-216 matte box. And out of hardware that helps interviewees do the increasingly popular down-the- lens style of interview, there’s the VoxBox Pro and Magic Video Box. While the Primelight Design Zee Prompt and affordable Desview T3 teleprompter provide solutions for presenting to camera.
