SOUND W INNER: HOWARD PERRY FOR MAIKEN
short film with actors, special effects and creative sound design. Yet Howard Perry manages a mix of great visuals and awesome audio in his fantasy short, Maiken . The sound design adds drama, the special effects are believable and the dialogue is crisp.
Every filmmaker knows incredible audio is essential. This category is for work where the soundtrack, sound design or sound recording is well-executed and adds a lot. For some, it’s hard enough capturing audio outside on a windy day, never mind a whole
If you like a challenge, then you’ll get on well with Jay Rozanski, a producer at Oxyfire Media, who doesn’t back down from anything. His task was to livestream the Galwad Festival in a groundbreaking production merging live performance, filmmaking and innovative distribution on social media, radio and live TV. It’s all about the diverse people and places of Wales, in a trilingual project that explores the social, economic and cultural consequences of a rise in global temperatures. It culminated in a five-hour live broadcast on Sky Arts from a slate quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog – which looked just incredible. There were more than a hundred pieces of content, immersing viewers in the action through single-shot cinematography. LIVESTREAMED EVENT WINNER: JAY ROZANSKI FOR GALWAD FESTIVAL

Andy Little shot a video with indie rockers The Pigeon Detectives, for their song Lovers Come and Lovers Go . “The idea was to make a high-energy visual, full of nostalgia for the early 2000s when the UK indie music scene was booming,” explains Little. “Think skinny jeans and sticky-floored venues.” The filming is great, but it’s in the edit where the video is turned into a work of art. It’s stunning and captivating, yet doesn’t distract from the music. “The frantic editing of the video blurs the line between memories of the past and how we view those memories later,” points out Little. Documentaries are where storytelling and visuals take the viewer on a journey of discovery. Our winner in this category is the incredible story of endurance runner and cyclist, Jenny Tough. She seems to have been born to take on challenges, the latest of which was running solo across six mountain ranges on six different continents. Documenting such a vast achievement was the job of Summit Fever Media in the production Solo – a film commissioned by Montane. Summit specialises in remote expeditions, filming extreme endeavours in inhospitable locations. Ellie Green has over ten years’ experience of filmmaking and acted as the film’s producer, director and editor. She spent countless days creating a deeply honest and awe-inspiring film.
