COMMERCIAL & CORPORATE WINNER: ADRIAN WEINBRECHT FOR BURGESS YACHTS
The heartland of paid work for independent companies – jobs commissioned by clients – is one of our flagship classes. We were looking for branded content and promo videos that stood out. The winning entry, by Adrian Weinbrecht for his client Burgess Yachts, is a stunning piece of work. The goal from the super yacht client was to build a campaign that engaged a younger audience around the experience of luxury travel. And it’s hard to believe, but all of Weinbrecht’s work for this film was created on indoor sets – including the flickering water. That just demonstrates his mastery of lighting and cinematography. “Sets were built to create the various ‘worlds’ required for the main brand film,” explained Lucy Smith from Burgess. “From these sets we captured a raft of rich, unified content, from stills to video teasers and vignettes, ensuring a broad collection of campaign-supporting material.” INSTRUCTIONAL WINNER: PETE SHEATH FOR GET CLOSER, WITH IMAGES LARGER THAN LIFE
Helping viewers to learn something new is a key skill for many commercial filmmakers. Pete Sheath of Studio 44 Media was up to the job when Canon cameras called on him to make a film called Get Closer, With Images Larger Than Life . The video was promoting a new Canon macro lens. The idea was to film master wildlife photographer Oliver Wright at the Tropical Butterfly House in Sheffield, where he’d tell viewers how to get great new images – all using Canon’s new lens, of course. The video amassed over 100,000 views on Canon’s YouTube page in the first few weeks, which was unusual for a lens launch.
ACTION & SPORT WINNER: MICHAEL FOX FOR PILOTA FERRARI
Michael Fox has filmed motorsport for years, and never has there been more demand for content than today. “Yet feedback suggests the authenticity of what’s created is in doubt,” he remarks. “Productions are evolving into reality TV, and viewers notice. PR people are more careful about what their drivers say. These factors dilute the true intent of a documentary.” Pilota Ferrari aimed to demonstrate what a genuine motorsport documentary can look like. The main subject, Christoph Ulrich, is a successful businessman and passionate Ferrari fan. He pushed himself to be ready to take part in the biggest endurance race in the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 2022.
