MEET PRO MOVIEMAKER’S FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR ADRIAN WEINBRECHT Adrian Weinbrecht has a truly stunning portfolio of multinational campaigns for high-end clients. He is firmly established as one of the UK’s top commercial movie shooters. His technical knowledge is immense, his personality is larger than life and his creativity knows no bounds. Here are some of his thoughts on work and life, in his own words. Personality has been part of my success. Lots of people can do good work, but you also have to give the client a good experience and reassure them along the way. Do both and it’s a recipe for repeat business. I really learned my craft. When I was assisting, I worked for brilliant people with great vision, but little business acumen, organisational or technical skills. I don’t buy it that artists don’t have to understand f/stops. I’ve always loved movies. A lot of stills photographers aspire to a cinematic look, certainly from lighting. I was always more about problem-solving, looking at what the feeling is we’re trying to evoke with the shoot and how the light and composition can help that feeling. I’m unashamedly commercial in my approach.
Commercial films are changing. The way drama is shot bleeds into the commercial world. We’re moving away from commercials as a short sizzle of a product like a car commercial, more into narrative and storytelling. People want to know the story of other people. Lighting for filmmaking is not too different from stills. You just need to give the talent space to move. Don’t be afraid of shadows – they are a gorgeous thing in motion. With my background of shooting portraits, I know I can make people look good in interviews. It’s all about the edit. People don’t think about the final edit enough. Multiple shots tell the story and you have to think about where each shot will sit in the timeline. Think about why you’re capturing each frame. I like directing and shooting. I’m not precious about directing or operating the camera. I’m better off directing someone else to do it so I can concentrate on the lighting and composition. I still get very excited by what light does to a scene.
