NEED-TO- KNOW

can’t recall visiting one which made such an effort with extra touches – like the welcome smoothies and heated lemongrass scented hot towels, or the orange sorbet, fresh macarons and herbal tea given after a treatment (I went for the Knotted Up massage, an intensive full body massage that promised to iron out all muscular kinks and did precisely that). The staff at Weavers’ House cocoon you in luxury from the moment you arrive, and the spa is a delightful addition to this already lovely hotel. If you can drag yourself out of The Swan’s rambling complex of buildings, a walk around the village is a treat, yielding scones and tea, antiques and local crafts every few steps – be sure to make a pit stop at The Parlour for a

scoop of heavenly ice cream or a hot chocolate. Slightly further afield, there’s stately home splendour to enjoy at nearby Ickworth House and Kentwell Hall, or countryside walks at Wolves Wood, an ancient woodland near Hadleigh. The verdict The Swan has a long-held reputation as the place to stay in the area, and it thoroughly deserves its perch on this pedestal. Jaw-dropping medieval grandeur, the gorgeous spa and excellent food make it worth the visit, with the beauty of Lavenham itself the cherry on the cake. Highly recommended for escaping the city for a weekend of wining, dining and pampering.
