Embracing imperfections While the Rebirth script was in progress, “the BLM movement was very much on our minds,” Maisanda recounts. “I developed the idea based on the initial impetus of what the 2011 London riots meant for us, but tried to look further into that and – through fiction – tell a story of growth out of the grief.” Once they had the story, the team faced decisions in pre-production, such as how to dress and choreograph the actors (so that they’d resemble a Renaissance painting), where to shoot and what frame rate would work best. They landed on all-white outfits for the lead actors, filming locally in Newham, East London and shooting in ‘almost 500fps’ according to Maisanda. The team only had two days in production, and it wasn’t always smooth sailing. “I think it’s a lie to say that a shoot can be perfect, without anything going wrong,” argues Claudio, who noted rain, unopened lilies and the London Marathon as three unexpected obstacles.
