LOVE LOCAL

A cup of tea with… Tomas P Hinton, director and designer at Tomas Kitchen Living, fills us in on timeless trends, showroom pride and his favourite range

CE: What do you love most about the space at the Tomas showroom on Mercers Row, Cambridge? TH: The new room we created is amazing… it’s set up as if it were a real home. We have a full-size kitchen in there with a dining area, lounge area – the lot. Plus floors by Kahrs and display sliding doors by our friends at ID Systems. The other side of the wall is the Production Centre… so don’t be shocked if you hear some machinery going! CE: What’s your favourite range there and why? TH: When I created our Natural Sheer model, I didn’t realise I’d pretty much nailed down the perfect handle-less kitchen for modern families. It’s annoyingly impossible to improve on! Natural Sheer is the quintessential Tomas kitchen, defined by soft, organic styling details. I also love

Cambridge Edition: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your role… Tomas P Hinton: Having designed the original kitchen and furniture collection, founded the Tomas brand and opened three showrooms between 2010 and 2015 (phew!), my role now is more relaxed. I meet and greet all new clients to our showrooms and work with them to create the plans for perfectly fabulous kitchens – which I still love doing! After plans and quotes are agreed, I pass the baton to my fantastic team who actually manufacture and install each project. CE: What’s the current must-have look in kitchen design? TH: I’m not a dedicated follower of fashion when it comes to kitchens. The kitchens I create are timeless and ‘classic modern’. Go for quality, clean lines and good design that never dates. Choose colours that you personally love and have always loved, as you won’t regret that in the years to come. If you want to lock down current trends, focus on wall paints, papers, soft furnishings, artworks, etc…

ALWAYS IN STYLE Clean lines, classic colours and high quality define the Tomas Kitchen Living look

our colour range – inspired by the abstract oil paintings of my father and grandfather. CE: If you could give one piece of advice to someone about to embark on a kitchen redesign project in their home, what would it be? TH: Go to a proper kitchen company and do it right… it doesn’t always cost that much more than a big sales-orientated outfit. Kitchens are really tricky and smaller specialists know the ropes, and will usually deliver much better results.
