A special year What have classic teen movie Clueless, auction site eBay and top Cambridge charity Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust got in common? They all turn 30 this year!

T his year, Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), the official hospital charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, is celebrating its 30th birthday. Thanks to the generosity of its amazing supporters, ACT has donated more than £150 million since it officially launched, funding cutting-edge equipment, specialist staff, extra comforts for patients and vital research – helping to transform patient care and save lives. Some of the incredible projects over the past 30 years include £7.5 million towards a new extension to the Rosie maternity hospital, with a new midwife- led Birth Centre and improved Neonatal Unit within the unit itself; the first MRI scanner wrap in the UK with nature- themed images to help alleviate patients’ anxiety – encouraging and allowing them to go through the scanner on the first attempt, saving patients’ lives and thousands of pounds per patient; as well as a £1.5-million campaign to buy Addenbrooke’s latest surgical robot. Pledging to continue the charity’s impressive 30 years of impact to date, ACT’s chief executive Shelly Thake said: “We’ve achieved so much in the first 30 years of our life, and we have even bigger ambitions for the next 30 years and beyond – including our public appeals to build two new hospitals: the Cambridge

Cancer Research Hospital and Cambridge Children’s Hospital.” Local businesses are an important contributor to ACT’s fundraising, and several are even launching their own special products to mark ACT’s 30th anniversary, helping to launch the charity’s brand-new tea parties campaign – Host a Tea Party for Addenbrooke’s. Renowned Cambridge institution and bakery Fitzbillies has set up a special window display dedicated to ACT’s 30th celebrations in its Trumpington Street store and will be donating £1 for every ACT cupcake sold during July – as well as 20% of sales from their special afternoon and cream tea sets. Co-owner Alison Wright said: “We’re delighted to be supporting such a wonderful organisation this summer. The work of saving and improving lives is vital, and Fitzbillies is honoured to be able to contribute even in a small way during this milestone year of the charity.” Jack’s Gelato is also getting involved, even creating an exclusive ACT-inspired gelato flavour! Owner Jack Van Praag said: “We’re helping ACT because we believe in the incredible work they do to support patients and their families at Addenbrooke’s. We’re proud to contribute to their 30th-anniversary celebrations with a special gelato flavour and a donation of 30% from every pint tub sold in July.”
