SOUND FOR AUDIO KIT WORDS ADAM DUCKWORTH VISION

Making a great film means mastering audio, so you’ll definitely need a decent shotgunmic

E very filmmaker has to record decent audio, and therefore requires a proper microphone – not the tiny, built-in one your camera has, as they are useless for anything other than a bit of background noise. You must invest in a mic designed for DSLR, mirrorless or cinema cameras, and ideally plug it into a recorder, or directly into your camera so it records top-quality audio alongside the video footage. As the output from an external mic is far stronger than the internal mic, you can

turn down the audio level on the camera. This reduces the in-camera gain and makes a massive difference, especially in quiet moments. External mics tend to be of a shotgun type, meaning there is a long tube that the noise travels down, pointed towards what you are trying to record. This makes them more directional and cuts down the noise from around the camera. We examine some of the best shotgun mics and accessories you can buy, at a variety of price points.
