ND OPTIONS FOR RF LENSES

With more cameras now adopting the RFmount, as used in the EOS C70, a popular accessory is a mount adapter to use the other lenses. The RF mount’s short flange distance not only allows use of lenses such as PL or EFmount, but also for adapters that use filtration behind the lens. The most popular types are EFmount and have built-in ND filters which can really help on cameras like the EOS R5C, R5 and R6, as well as Red Komodo and V-Raptor. Brands such as Canon, KipperTie and Meike have produced adapters at various price points, allowing you to put different types of filtration into them, such as NDs, diffusion or polarisers. At the affordable end is the Meike drop-in adapter and Canon VND adapter. Both come with

a 1.5-9 stop Variable ND, which are set using a small control wheel on the side of the mount. There is no way of knowing the precise strength of ND you have dialled in, though. All VNDs can suffer from colour shifts and cross-polarisation at times, giving differences in exposure across the frame at some settings. It’s important to set white-balance regularly. To avoid these issues, look into the high-end KipperTie revolver system, which has a revolving cartridge insert with four full-spectrum, different-strength individual ND filters. Each cartridge has a range of ND strengths and the exact amount of ND dialled in is clearlymarked. We’ve looked at all these systems. If you want to learn more, head to CVP’s YouTube channel.

The C70 features internal NDs, so one kind of adapter commonly used is a focal reducer, which allows you to fit full-frame lenses onto smaller sensor cameras. This means you can achieve the wider field of view, shallower depth-of-field look that is associated with larger sensors. Canon has its own focal reducer, which works well on the C70.
