CINE LENS SPECIAL

EPIC OPTICS FROM VILTROX You might not have heard of Viltrox yet, but the Chinese brand has an astonishing range of lenses, specialising in full-frame anamorphics called the Epic range. There is a set of a 35mm, 50mm and both. All prices are quoted in US dollars even for European shipping. These are the only set of 1.33x anamorphic lenses covering full-frame you can buy. They’re built to have a consistent tone in all focal lengths, and Viltrox says they show virtually zero focus breathing. And of course they all produce the trademark oval bokeh and horizontal blue flares so beloved by sci-fi cinematographers.

They are typical of the latest style of anamorphics from a growing group of emerging manufacturers that provide a picture shape that’s completely different from normal lenses. The Viltrox versions aren’t designed to be clinically sharp and soulless, but offer a delicate and soft image performance, verging on retro with a pleasing skin colour reproduction.

TOKINA’S BUENA VISTA CLUB

The mount is shimmable to ensure a precise fit, too. Aspherical elements and modern coatings give a neutral look with little aberration. For a more vintage, swirly bokeh, the brand also offers its Vista-P series in 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm. Air spacing between multiple elements creates a Petzval effect, which draws attention to the centre of frame. They’re available either as a new lens or upgrade to an existing Vista Prime lenses. A Vista 50mm T1.5 costs £5764/$5999 while a Vista-P is £7000/$7499. tokinacinema.com

Tokina’s high-end cinema line of a dozen Vista prime lenses includes the 180mm T1.9 telephoto, 18mm T1.5 super-wide and a full range of ten focal lengths in between. Their unique selling point is that they give sensor coverage well beyond full-frame, making them ideal for the massive-sensor cinema cameras coming onto the market from brands like Arri and Fujifilm. The Vista lenses have been designed to offer as little focus breathing as possible, and have a consistent gear size with a front 112mm screw-in thread in all sizes apart from the super-wide 18mm prime.
