AWARDS FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR

AERIAL WINNER: JEREMY LEVIS FOR MONTELUPO FILMS

work takes time and expertise to do well, just as all filmmaking. So the masters of the air deserve to be celebrated. Jeremy Levis of Montelupo Films shoots commercial work for a variety of clients, but what sets him apart is his drone work, capturing amazing scenes at locations bathed in wonderful light.

The view from on high from drones, helicopters or planes adds so much to a production, and with the affordability of modern drones it’s easier than ever to get the high angle. But it’s not as simple as just putting a drone up for anything more than an establishing shot. Incredible airborne

LIGHTING WINNER: WARREN EIG FOR A FAMILY X-MAS

Amazing lighting adds to any project, so filmmakers should get to grips with it. The very best are grand masters of lighting – and that’s the case for our winner Warren Eig’s super-slick short film A Family X-Mas . The film is about a mob boss, Johnny Guccianno, who accidentally wakes up one Christmas Eve to discover Santa Claus in his house. Johnny doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, but after some convincing he realises he’s captured the real Saint Nick. Unfortunately, Johnny’s not a big fan of Christmas. “It was a two-day shoot on a budget of $3500. I spent a week decorating the house to look like the early morning of an afterparty. Santa’s make-up itself took five-and-a-half hours,” says Eig. “It was initially a stand-alone director’s showcase written, produced, edited and directed by me, but became a full feature. “After a long casting period and actors committing then dropping out, the film was set to roll. Done under a SAG agreement, night exterior filming took place in sunny Los Angeles until a rainstorm rolled in, so the exteriors were shot with light rain. But we had to cut it short as the sky opened and a deluge came down. Thankfully, we got what we needed outside.” Successfully lighting interiors, and rainy exteriors, is testament to Eig’s ability to sculpt light into a look.

Godox has a range of LEDs to suit all projects at affordable prices. It has powerful COB lights, fresnel lights, LED panels large and small, tube lights, ring lights and more. Its range of modifiers includes big parabolic softboxes and beauty dishes, as well as gels, diffusion, scrims, stands and everything a professional set-up could need. The brand also offers hybrid lights, either powerful COBs or large LED panels that flash, making it suitable for stills and movies. COB lights are the most popular with filmmakers; and these come with a standard Bowens mount for a variety of modifiers.
