AWARDS FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR

YOUTUBER WINNER: BRAD CHEEK FOR BRADVERTS MULTIMEDIA

YouTube is the delivery mechanism of choice for so many people, and the best creative YouTubers produce engaging, well-shot and produced content for their own or a client’s channels. That’s certainly the case for Brad Cheek, whose fine art approach creates some incredible work. His film Last Man Standing is a short about a man with terminal cancer, “but with a sci-fi feel, so can be interpreted in many different ways,” says Cheek. “The key to making this film was the location, which gave me the idea. The big challenge was the special effect of the moving light, created by a homemade light drone.” His documentary film for the National Garden Scheme had to be interesting for both gardeners and the casual viewer. It has had 70,000 views on Cheek’s channel and 81,000 on the National Garden Scheme’s channel. To show his versatility, Cheek also shot a music video for Red Ray and the Reprobates, recently released as a single. This includes live footage from the O2 Academy Bristol, and was shot in the style of Reservoir Dogs , which the band wanted. “I tried to incorporate some camera angles from the film,” he says.

more compact fixtures to produce professional results. They are easy to use, can be controlled by an app and produce constant light. Amaran has a range of COB hard lights, light panels, light tubes and on-camera LED panels – plus its products take a whole host of Aputure modifiers, too.

When it’s time to take your work to the next level, the biggest difference you can make is to invest in great lighting and modifiers. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, as Amaran offers a range of incredibly good- value LED lights that are stunning performers. Sister brand of Aputure, Amaran uses much of the same tech in smaller and

EVENT WINNER: DAVID SPURDENS FOR OPERATION POPPY

Most event videos capture the crucial moments of a full day and distil them into a polished edit of a sporting showcase, gig, party or road trip. Often there are talking head interviews, graphics, a presenter or a team of presenters. But David Spurdens decided to go a different, far more creative route when shooting some World War II re-enactors at Bottisham Airfield Museum in Cambridgeshire. He scripted a full short film to show the actors in simulated fighting action, complete with explosions, gunshots and super slow-motion showing bullet cases flying through the air.

SOCIAL MEDIA WINNER: JOHN OWEN FOR HIGH-TECH ENGINEERING

Like it or not, short-form social media video is often the most-viewed content and a huge growth area. From sub-one- minute verticals for Instagram Reels, Facebook Stories, YouTube Shorts or TikTok to longer pieces, social media is where it’s at for plenty of paying clients. In a world full of social media noise, it’s hard to make engaging content for clients, including one engineering company. But through careful lighting and techniques such as day-to-night motion lapse, John Owen has made some attention-grabbing content for his customer that sets them apart from the rest.
