AWARDS FILMMAKER OF THE YEAR

CINEMATOGRAPHY WINNER: DK GREENLEY FOR BLUR

With Greenley’s stunt background, there was always going to be some daring action – and professional stunt performers were called upon for a dangerous staircase fall. With cinematography headed up by Alison Ivosevich, armed with her Red camera, and stunt work co-ordinated by Eric Van Arsdale, this is a high-end crew that helped pull it together. Ultimately, it’s the film itself that truly shines. It’s stylishly lit, professionally acted to a great script that’s produced well. This is a polished piece of work that Greenley is rightly very proud of – and a worthy winner of a Filmmaker of the Year award in one of the toughest categories.

When you have worked in the film industry for years, you get to learn a thing or two. But it’s a huge shift from being a stunt performer in Hollywood films to writing, directing, producing and voice-acting in your very own short. Yet that’s what DK Greenley successfully pulled off with his first short-form film Blur . It’s a classy short with a real international team pulled from the US, UK and India. And it even has the celebrity touch as its star is Briana Cuoco, who appeared in TV series like Harley Quinn and The Flight Attendant , and is a main cast member of Netflix’s new DC Comics series Dead Boy Detectives . She’s also the sister of TV royalty Kaley Cuoco.

SOUND WINNER: KAYS AL-ATRAKCHI FOR EVERBLISS INN

All filmmakers know incredible sound design or sound recording is vital to any film. This year, Kays Al-Atrakchi proved his skills for the supernatural thriller Everbliss Inn . As the winner of last year’s award for best music video, Al-Atrakchi knows how important it is for sound to be a vital component of the finished product. He proved it in Everbliss Inn , created to be part of an anthology of shorts. It’s a thriller with a Twilight Zone vibe, where the sound keeps you in suspense and helps deliver the perfect mood. The film is about a couple called Kate and Jackson who decide to spend a night at Everbliss Inn – an idyllic B&B deep in rural Georgia. Kate develops an immediate connection to the inn and quirky host Gwendolyn, while Jackson experiences strange happenings that point to a more sinister nature hiding beneath the tranquil facade. They soon realise that checking out of Everbliss Inn isn’t as easy as checking in. The audio recording is sublime and matches perfectly to the well-shot visuals in this cool and highly professional movie.
