Sony is TIPA’s global star The first full-frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter took top honours for professional hybrid cameras in the Technical Image Press Association World Awards

W ith Pro Moviemaker now part of the influential Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), it’s little surprise that more video-focused cameras and lenses have scooped top honours in its annual awards for excellence. At the top of the pile was the first full-frame mirrorless hybrid camera with a global shutter – the Sony A9 III – while the Red V-Raptor 8K VV won the professional video camera award. This camera has now also been upgraded to included a global shutter in the latest X-designated model, as we finally see an end to rolling shutter artefacts that can blight video performance. On the Sony, the judges said: “Global shutter systems record all pixels in the frame simultaneously, and the A9 III is the first full-frame iteration in a hybrid or video/stills camera. The amazing benefits

are that global shutters eliminate artefacts and defects like panning jitter, light flicker and screen tearing – which results from the flash going off during video recording. TIPA editors see global shutter technology leading to a new breed of hybrid cameras that will change what cameras can capture and bring newfound tools and techniques to the pro’s kit.” Nikon’s stunning Z 8 mirrorless camera, complete with its 4K/120p video performance and high-resolution stills, was the winner in the professional full- frame camera class. And the Fujifilm GFX100 II cleaned up in the medium format category, with its huge sensor and upgraded video spec.
