Sony is TIPA’s global star The first full-frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter took top honours for professional hybrid cameras in the Technical Image Press Association World Awards
W ith Pro Moviemaker now part of the influential Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), it’s little surprise that more video-focused cameras and lenses have scooped top honours in its annual awards for excellence. At the top of the pile was the first full-frame mirrorless hybrid camera with a global shutter – the Sony A9 III – while the Red V-Raptor 8K VV won the professional video camera award. This camera has now also been upgraded to included a global shutter in the latest X-designated model, as we finally see an end to rolling shutter artefacts that can blight video performance. On the Sony, the judges said: “Global shutter systems record all pixels in the frame simultaneously, and the A9 III is the first full-frame iteration in a hybrid or video/stills camera. The amazing benefits
are that global shutters eliminate artefacts and defects like panning jitter, light flicker and screen tearing – which results from the flash going off during video recording. TIPA editors see global shutter technology leading to a new breed of hybrid cameras that will change what cameras can capture and bring newfound tools and techniques to the pro’s kit.” Nikon’s stunning Z 8 mirrorless camera, complete with its 4K/120p video performance and high-resolution stills, was the winner in the professional full- frame camera class. And the Fujifilm GFX100 II cleaned up in the medium format category, with its huge sensor and upgraded video spec. The camera we raved about recently, the Panasonic Lumix G9 II, took the best professional Micro Four Thirds award. The judges commented: “The camera’s video and stills capture capabilities, which
