Panasonic’s new Lumix S9 might look like a simple consumer camera, especially as it comes in a choice of black, red, olive and blue. But it’s actually the smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless in the Lumix S series and uses the same 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor as the S5 II – as well as its phase detection autofocus and Active IS vibration reduction. Its dual native ISO sensor has bases at ISO 100 and 640, can shoot in anamorphic and offers 6K/30p 4:2:0 10-bit recording as well as C4K/60p in 4:2:2 10-bit. To further prove its video credentials, the S9 has a real-time LUT function via a dedicated LUT button on the camera body. The new Lumix Lab app allows a unique LUT colour file to be created on your smartphone, so video files from the camera can be instantly shared without the need for post-production on a computer. The Lumix S9 introduces a new recording format, MP4 Lite. Shooting Flashy Lumix S9 has filmmaking credentials

PANASONIC’S PANCAKE DAY

It is manual focus, so may seem perfect for movies, but there is no filter thread to take a variable ND and the aperture is fixed at f/8. Filmmakers may have a hard time using it. More interesting is the Lumix S 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 full-frame lens, which comes to the line-up soon. It’s compact and has a closest shooting distance of 0.15m/0.49ft. The new Lumix S 26mm f/8 prime lens is an ideal match for the S9 camera thanks to its small size and slimline profile – which is claimed not to compromise on image quality. This pancake lens costs £220/$198 and is made to be a general-use, walkaround optic for the S9 or any other L-Mount camera. It is a mere 18.1mm/0.7in long and weighs 58g/0.13lb, using five lens elements in five groups, and focuses as close as 0.25m/0.82ft.
