Nikon Z 6III specs revealed Nikon has officially announced its new hybrid wonder with specs that pack an impressive punch
FOLLOWING A WIDELY publicised teaser campaign in recent weeks, the official announcement of the new Nikon Z 6III will come as no surprise to most. But it does bring confirmation of the camera’s specs, which boast impressive numbers. At its heart is the world's first 24.5-megapixel ‘partially stacked’ full-frame CMOS sensor, which means the circuitry is stacked only at the top and bottom edges. Finding this middle ground between stacked and unstacked ensures fast data readouts that deliver up to 120fps in stills and 240fps in video, while keeping costs more affordable. This is complemented by the Expeed 7: the same processor found in the Z 8 and Z 9. As such, the Z 6III enjoys the same autofocus performance and inherits their AI- powered subject detection modes, which can recognise a whole host “AT THE HEART OF THE NIKON Z 6III IS THE WORLD’S FIRST PARTIALLY STACKED SENSOR” of different subjects. Possibly the most notable feature of the Z 6III is the extremely bright electronic viewfinder, which can achieve up to 4000 nits. This, combined with 5.76 million dots of resolution and 60fps refresh rate, makes for impressive reading. When it comes to video, the camera can record 6K Raw and oversampled 4K in camera – and reaches up to 240fps slow-motion footage. It offers 12-bit Raw and
10-bit Log recording, and supports NRAW, ProRes Raw HQ, ProRes 422 HQ, H.265 and H.264 codecs. The camera’s built-in image- stabilisation system uses Nikon’s vibration reduction (VR) technology for up to eight stops of correction. Its weather-resistant body weighs in at 760g and will ship at a retail price of £2699 for body only. Kit options include the 24-70mm (£3249), the 24-120mm (£3539) and the 24-200mm (£3439). Welcome to issue 116 of Photography News , our tenth anniversary edition and my first as editor. By way of introduction, my name is Pete Townshend, lifelong writer, decades-long photographer and beginner father of two. It’s an honour to be taking over from Roger Payne as your editor – I think I can speak for everyone when I say that he has left big shoes to fill! So, what can you expect in our latest issue? Suffice to say, it has been a busy couple of months for launches. It all began with Fujifilm announcing its quartet of new products, and since then there has been a slew of new and exciting releases from many of the big players. Canon, Leica, Sigma, Panasonic and Nikon have all got in on the action with new cameras, lenses and more to shout about. Lumix GH7 announced Panasonic has recently unveiled the latest flagship model in its Micro Four Thirds Lumix G series – the Lumix GH7. new real-time AF-recognition feature for tracking a wide variety of subjects, including humans, animals and many different vehicles. In addition, improved image stabilisation technology provides The camera understandably builds on the success of its predecessor, the GH6, by enhancing its capabilities in video. In that respect, it certainly has
perspective distortion correction for videos and a High Mode to further stabilise footage when on the move. This is complemented by 32-bit float recording, which removes the need for level adjustments during shooting. However, this feature is only available with a specific XLR adapter, which will be sold separately. Sigma has introduced the 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art lens – the world’s first full-frame mirrorless zoom lens with a constant maximum aperture of f/1.8. Available for L-Mount and Sony E-mount, it retails for £1299. With a wide constant maximum aperture of f/1.8 across the zoom range, it offers low-light capabilities that rival many prime lenses. The Lumix S 26mm f/8 is a compact and lightweight manual focus lens aiming to find the perfect balance between portability and quality. The lens offers a fixed focal length of 26mm and maximum aperture of f/8. The lens measures a very portable 18.1mm in length and weighs around 58g. As such, it is being positioned as a versatile option for everyday, casual and creative photography. extremely fast, on point and incredibly quiet. Combined with the wide aperture, it delivered in lower-light conditions and the fall-off from the focal point into lovely smooth background bokeh was pleasing. Sharpness also looked excellent and there was no visible distortion. That said, we only had the lens in-hand for a relatively short period of time, so watch this space for a more in-depth review when we get our hands on a proper test unit. Until then, rest assured that this lens is very capable indeed. Its predecessor, the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM, left big shoes to fill, but so far it seems the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM has big enough feet. canon.co.uk
Canon has revealed the RF 35mm f/1.4 prime lens – and the headline here is undoubtedly a clear push towards hybrid shooters. This new addition notably boasts a dedicated aperture ring with smooth action to give videographers easier access and better control. Inside, the lens promises minimal focus breathing as well as an 11-blade aperture for smooth bokeh. The AF uses Canon’s speedy Nano USM and a newly introduced Voice Coil Motor (VCM). There are 14 elements in 11 groups – with two UD and two aspherical lenses to deliver maximum sharpness. It weighs in at 555g and measures 76.5mm in diameter and 99.3mm in length. We were fortunate enough to have an advanced try and the AF was remarkable:

Sigma updates 24-70mm f/2.8
making it suitable for video recording with consistent focus transitions. The lens’ AF is driven by Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, which, according to Sigma, increases AF speed by more than three times when compared to the previous model. The 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, weighing 745g, and features a dust- and splash-resistant structure, along with a water- and oil- repellent coating on the front element. Sigma has updated its 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art lens, compatible with L-Mount and Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. It said this new version includes enhanced optical performance, faster AF and better usability for photographers and filmmakers with mirrorless systems. The lens features six FLD glass, two SLD glass and five aspherical lens elements. The constant f/2.8 aperture creates soft bokeh and pleasing background separation. A close focusing distance of 17cm achieves a maximum magnification of 1:2.7. Sigma told us the optical design also minimises focus breathing,
The EOS R1 is coming in 2024 Canon has officially announced the development of the EOS R1 – the first flagship model in the EOS R System – designed for sports, news and video production pros. We don’t have many details about the new camera, just that it’s a significant step up from the EOS R3. Central to the EOS R1’s advancements is the integration of a newly developed processor, the Digic Accelerator, with the existing Digic X processor. Canon said this combination will work in partnership with a new sensor to deliver rapid processing of large volumes of data, and will be perfectly complemented by improvements to AI-powered AF. This will be interesting for sports shooters since, aside from fast and accurate tracking, Canon claims it can identify and focus on players performing actions like shooting a ball to ensure critical focus on key moments. Canon is currently testing the EOS R1 in the field and, while no exact date has been set, the company told us the camera will be released at some point in 2024. Shoot Leica on iPhone Leica has introduced Leica Lux, a
Leica Classic, Leica Contemporary and Leica Black-and-White. There are automatic, manual and aperture-priority modes for users to manually adjust settings like exposure compensation, shutter speed and aperture (f/1.4 to f/8). The app is currently available for iPhone only under a freemium model. The free version gives access to the Automatic Photo Mode, Aperture Mode, an emulation of the Leica Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4 ASPH and five Leica Looks. Panasonic has announced the Lumix S9 – the smallest and lightest camera in the Lumix S series – weighing approximately 403g. A quick glance at its features reveals it has its targets fixed squarely at the content creator market. The camera boasts a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor – equivalent to the one used in the Lumix S5 II – combined with Panasonic’s latest image processing engine. This powers phase detection AF and image stabilisation, which Panasonic said offer excellent subject tracking and 6.5 stops of benefit. A standout feature of the Lumix S9 is its Real Time LUT function, accessible via a dedicated button on the camera body. This enables users to apply various colour styles directly in-camera and is complemented by the new Lumix Lab app, which allows users to create unique LUT profiles on their phone and transfer them onto the camera as custom settings. Video creators will appreciate the MP4 Lite recording format, optimised for smartphone. This format supports open gate recording in 4:2:0 10-bit at 30p/25p, and is intended to facilitate high-quality video capture. Pentax makes a splash with WG series updates Two new Pentax waterproof cameras – the WG-1000 and WG-8 – join the WG series of durable, all-weather adventure cameras, featuring robust designs which are also dustproof and shock-resistant. The Pentax WG-1000 is aimed at enthusiasts for use in casual underwater photography, offering water resistance up to 15m for a continuous hour. The WG-1000 is also engineered to withstand harsh conditions on land, with dustproofing and shock protection from up to 2m. It features a back-side illuminated 16.35-megapixel CMOS sensor and a 4x optical zoom lens ranging from 4.9mm to 19.6mm (a full-frame equivalent of 27mm to 108mm). The higher-end Pentax WG-8 will replace the WG-6 and claim the title of the toughest model in the WG series. It is waterproof up
Canon sees double Canon has added the RF-S 3.9mm f/3.5 STM Dual Fisheye APS-C VR lens to the EOS R System. It joins the existing RF 5.2mm f/2.8 VR lens and is designed to enable high- quality 3D VR content creation for both experienced users and newcomers. It is further evidence of Canon’s push into the VR content creation market. The lens incorporates dual fisheye optics placed side by side to simulate human binocular vision. Each lens captures an image from a slightly different perspective, creating two separate images which correspond to the views from the left and right eyes. This set-up generates a stereoscopic effect, enabling depth perception in VR for an immersive experience. A 144° recording angle provides a narrower field of view compared to VR180 shooting, but when viewed through a compatible headset, Canon claims that this viewing angle and 60mm interpupillary distance combine to offer a natural, forward-facing view. The set-up closely mimics human vision, delivering a realistic 3D effect. The RF-S 3.9mm f/3.5 is also the first Canon 3D lens with AF, featuring a One Shot AF setting to streamline the shooting process. It is available for pre-order at a price of £1249. canon.co.uk

Hobolite’s new continuous LED, the Iris, is a small and portable light unit made for photographers and content creators, featuring optical modifiers and optional coloured gel filters. The Iris’ good looks are inspired by vintage cameras, with a weather- resistant IP54-rated aluminium body and vegan leatherette detailing – making it good for both indoor and outdoor use. Sigma has announced a Canon RF mount version of the popular 18-50mm f/2.8. The standard zoom lens is designed for APS-C size mirrorless cameras and features a constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout its zoom range. Key features include a versatile full-frame equivalent zoom range of 28.8-80mm and minimum focus distance of 12.1cm, delivering a max magnification ratio of 1:2.8. A maximum diameter of 69.2mm, 74.5mm length and 300g weight make it the smallest and lightest in its class. Sigma says it has developed a new control algorithm for the Canon RF mount that optimises AF drive and communication speeds. Combining fashion photography with a street-style approach, Andrew Barber requires powerful imaging capabilities in a lightweight package FUJIFILM GFX100S II: Walking the catwalk ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
“You never know when something will happen – I love being able to create photos in the moment, as soon as I see something” For the duration of a fashion event, it’s then a case of rinse and repeat for Barber. “Typically, I will work from nine in the morning until seven in the evening. I’ll be going from location to location, then rushing home to edit my work and submit it to my clients. Holding a camera for that long can be exhausting, particularly when you add the weight of an additional lens.” Fortunately, the GFX100S II is the lightest camera Fujifilm has ever fit a 102-megapixel sensor into. At just 883g, Barber feels he doesn’t have to compromise between imaging capabilities and working with something manageable. “Being able to walk around with a camera, feeling like I can compose whenever it’s necessary, it’s extremely important,” he comments. “You never know when something will happen, and you want to make a picture of that moment with ease. I don’t like to faff around with a backpack and take my lenses out then set everything up. I love creating photos in the moment – as soon as I see something. “Ever since using the FUJIFILM GFX100S and now the GFX100S II, I see the beauty within my own work,” Barber concludes. “Cropping into my images and still seeing them appear extremely sharp – you have so much more to play around with. You can manipulate your images in many different ways without breaking the file. It’s a beautiful camera to be using and definitely the way forward.”
It was at Paris Fashion Week that Barber had the opportunity to work with the new FUJIFILM GFX100S II. The way it seamlessly blends high- end performance with a lightweight build is perfect for his work. With his street-style images still a speciality, Barber tells us about the imaging challenges unique to working in the fashion world. “Unpredictable is a word you can use – you never know when you’re going to see something special,” he remarks. “With street or travel photography, I believe you can always go out and find something worth documenting with a little more ease. Add ‘style’ to the end of the word and you constantly find yourself needing to analyse the way each and every individual is dressed, as well as the environment you are working in. The cut, the prints, the hidden messages and level of detail on an outfit, colour combinations, layering – the list goes on and on. You have to be fast when photographing a fashion week as there is so much happenning in a short space of time.” Furnished with the high- performance X-Processor 5 imaging engine, the GFX100S II can deliver highly responsive AF, helping Barber attain the results he strives for with incredible reliability. “I work in manual on my camera but make the most of Fujifilm’s AF abilities and subject tracking; everything in fashion moves so quickly,” Barber admits. “You want to create the perfect image within a small timeframe, so this tool is crucial. Fortunately, the tracking on the GFX100S II is incredible. “Burst mode is something I use frequently too. The GFX100S II can do 7fps, which is ample – especially because you can make 102-megapixel photos, meaning you have more than enough data to work with. Just as long as you time your movement right and are in a good position, you can create that image perfectly. “There’s so much going on; you have to look out for security or even cars – sometimes you’re standing in the middle of the road trying to frame something up,” Barber explains. “You’ll have between 100 and 200 people coming out of a show and must carefully see who is best to photograph, observing if you can try and tell a story from it.”
“I INITIALLY BEGAN photography by walking around the streets of London in search of individuals with distinct styles. The goal of street- style photography is to inspire and influence the way we dress daily,” begins Andrew Barber, a fashion photographer and videographer based in the UK. “I’d spend a lot of time walking around east and central London, where I might find people with an interesting look. By the end of the year, I built up a small portfolio with over 360 of my favourite looks on the streets of London. “A friend of mine saw my work and asked me to do a gig during London Fashion Week for a small client. This was the place to be as you had fashion buyers, editors, models and celebrities travelling from all around the world to attend these shows. You can see them congregating at the shows, eating at cafes and going from venue to venue. Later, I went on to work for GQ China and Italy. In 2019, I was the first street-style photographer to work for all editions of GQ around the world. “This is where it all grew,” he adds. “I was primarily known as a street-style photographer but as time went on, I branched into backstage and catwalk photography across the main fashion capitals. I was also invited to emerging fashion weeks in countries like Fiji, Kazakhstan and even Georgia, to shed light on new designers and continue to build an international portfolio of my work with other magazine companies.”
