accordingly when I half-pressed the shutter. Impressively, the system even works for glasses wearers like me. The magic doesn’t stop there. The R1’s subject detection and tracking capabilities are unparalleled. Once locked onto a subject, the AF makes sure it stays sharp throughout the frame, no matter how erratically it moves. To test this, I visited a local beach and photographed seabirds in flight. These birds are quick and unpredictable, yet the R1 delivered a hit rate of over 80%. Canon credits this performance to the updated Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system, enhanced with deep-learning tech. It’s faster, smarter and can focus on incredibly fine details. Sports photographers will also appreciate the Action Priority AF mode, which uses AI to recognise specific actions – such as a slam dunk in basketball or header in football – and focus on the player performing them. While the EOS R1 is designed for action-packed scenarios, it’s also a versatile tool for general photography and video. Verdict What a camera. The R1 is a technological tornado that blows anything else I’ve used out of the water. The handling is fantastic and the level of specification speaks for itself, but it’s the autofocus system that is the real star of the show. I’d have the confidence to capture almost any moving subject with this in my hands. However, if having the flagship model isn’t the be-all and end-all to you, it’s worth noting that many of these AF and ISO capabilities are also available in the EOS R5 Mark II, which is £2500 less.
