“For cameras, most of the big players were named in at least one category”

Continued from page 1

Let’s start with the results that everyone wants to hear about. In the cameras class, most of the big players were named top in at least one category. OM System cleaned up in Micro Four Thirds with the impressive OM-1 Mark II and OM-5 both claiming a top spot. Nikon’s Z 6III and Z 8 enjoyed wins in the full-frame categories – and there was a notable performance from Fujifilm too, which took best enthusiast APS-C mirrorless camera for the X-T50 as well as best compact camera for the X100VI. When it comes to lenses, Sigma nabbed three wins for its 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN II Art, 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro and 14mm f/1.4 DG DN Art – with the latter named best wide- angle lens for the second year in a row. While cameras and lenses are arguably the most exciting, in many cases they would be nothing without the accessories that complement them. Winners across this incredibly competitive area were evenly spread. First, the Sachtler Flowtech75 Aktiv MS tripod deserves a mention for

EDITOR’S LETTER PETE TOWNSHEND

Happy New Year! As a journalist, it’s my job to be a cynic, but when it comes to the start of a new year I just can’t help but succumb to all those feelings of positivity and excitement at what lies ahead – and this year feels extra special. Of course, 2025 is the start of my first full year as editor of PN , so that is playing a part, but mostly this excitement has been sparked by all the fantastic things that the next 12 months will bring for the title. The biggest headline is the official launch of our new website and digital offering. The priority has been to make the website more accessible with a focus on you, the reader, and providing constant updates so you can read all the latest news as it happens. There is also a new selection of free photography and videography courses available, all of which are offered as convenient email series that automatically deliver lessons at weekly intervals. We plan to add courses to the library regularly, so keep your eyes peeled for brand- new things to try. There have been many highly talented people working on this

POWER PLAY Lexar’s 900MB/s speed and Sandisk’s 4TB storage (above) are impressive. The Elinchrom (left) adds 500W output and wireless control LD150RS and Kenro Macro Ring Flash for best portable flash, best LED light and best on-camera flash, respectively. A special mention goes to the Elinchrom ELC Pro HD 500, which held its title as best mains flash. Lightroom was named best image editing software this year, and Affinity Photo 2 from Serif gained the Editor’s Choice award for its impressive feature set. Lexar and Sandisk were recognised in the storage categories, while Calibrite’s super-simple Display 123 took the Editor’s Choice award in colour management. Finally, the PN 2024 Awards would not be complete without recognising the retailers and services that give you the advice, protection and support you need. MPB, Wex, Whitewall, Amazing Internet, Cewe and The Insurance Emporium are just a few names to mention. Not forgetting Chris Simmons Photography, which was named best training provider for the fourth year in a row. Turn to page 15 to discover all the winners and find out if your favourites came out on top.

Over the course of the year, more and more content will begin appearing on the website – some of it exclusive digital features that you won’t find anywhere else – so make sure you stay tuned! The best way to do so is to visit the website and sign up for the Photography News Weekly newsletter, which delivers all the latest content direct to your email every week. This is all designed to work seamlessly alongside the printed edition, which we will continue to lovingly craft and deliver every other month. Speaking of which, this one’s a cracker, with the eagerly anticipated results of the PN 2024 Awards, along with tests of the Fujifilm X-M5 and mighty EOS R1 for your reading pleasure. Enjoy!
