Shooting a love story in the depths of Iceland’s winter – while visually striking – poses serious practical challenges. Director Coz Greenop discusses the most difficult film he’s ever made
C oz Greenop has a wealth A prime example is his feature House Red , a project that involved a five-year odyssey grappling with funding setbacks, logistical nightmares and even mafia involvement, all while contending with the unexpected curveball of Covid-19 (read all about it in Definition ’s February 2023 issue). Greenop openly acknowledges that the serenity of a picturesque Tuscan vineyard was a crucial anchor that saved his sanity during this endeavour. As if foretold by fate, his latest film, It All Comes with the Cold Water , faced a starkly contrasting challenge. The production ventured into the depths of Iceland’s winter – an environment of experience in navigating challenging film productions.
drastically different from the tranquillity of northern Italy. “The Icelandic Film Commission (Film in Iceland) said we were nuts to film at that time of year with the budget we had and, looking back, I think we got super lucky with the weather – out of a 12-day shoot we only had two days where we couldn’t film due to the weather being so crazy,” he explains. “We didn’t really have a backup plan either, as the whole point of being in Iceland was to show off the landscape – so it really wouldn’t have worked if all the scenes and dialogue were shot sat inside a car.” It All Comes with the Cold Water is about the last few days of a relationship between Anna, a native Icelander, and Theo, an Irish photographer.
