ADVENTURE SPECIAL KIT

GEAR UP FOR AN EPIC ADVENTURE WORDS Nicola Foley

If you’re leaving your comfort zone far behind, make sure you have equipment you can depend on. Here’s some of the finest adventure kit on the market

A SOUND CHOICE

In the adrenaline-pumping world of adventure filmmaking, capturing high-quality audio is sometimes overlooked (and later regretted). But whether you’re scaling wind-whipped summits, traversing humid jungles or navigating icy plains, you need audio tools that excel in extreme conditions and deliver an on-point final product. Sennheiser’s MKH 8000 series – a collection of RF condenser microphones – hit the mark, offering clean and accurate sound, while dealing exceptionally well with temperature extremes and humidity. The shotgun model, the MKH 8060, has a compact design ideal for camera mounting, a rugged metal housing and is extremely weather-proof due to its RF circuit. Audio-wise, it gives you natural sound, attenuating off-axis sound without colouration. Keep an eye out for the MKH 8030 figure-of- eight model, which previewed at IBC and will enable mid/side stereo recordings in the future.

ROCK STEADY

Out in the wilds, a steady hand is your best friend. The right tripod will give you rock-solid support and keep you anchored through sludge, sand and snow – an essential companion in unforgiving terrain. Enter the award-winning Sachtler Flowtech, a versatile, lightweight tripod that deploys with lightning speed and grants unrivalled versatility. This tripod is a mainstay for DOPs in the Red Bull Media House, utilised in the mountain bike film The Old World , snowboarding world tour movie Driven and many others. Available in 75mm and 100mm bowl sizes, features include quick- release brakes, ergonomic carbon-fibre legs and a versatile hinge-lock system. They’ve been rigorously tested in punishing conditions, so you can rest assured they won’t fail you at the critical moment.
