DS Colour Labs

Sim Lab

Established in 1954, DS Colour Labs offers a multitude of printing services, and you can’t help but be impressed by the range of options when you scroll down the website. From standard to large format printing, canvas and acrylic prints and Chromaluxe and aluminium panels, there is plenty of choice. There are even more unusual options, too, such as octagonal acrylic panels available up to 24x24in – if you want something a little different. In standard printing, available sizes start from a 5x3.5in snapshot and go up to 49x20in poster-sized prints, with the choice

of five different finishes – Fujifilm Lustre, pearl, glossy, velvet and Kodak Metallic. Digital prints are competitively priced, too. An A4 glossy or lustre print is 70p each and A3 £1.20, and there is a huge choice when it comes to sizes – that includes panorama formats, with a 36x12in print costing £5.50. Files are uploaded via simple drag-and-drop interface, so the ordering process is straightforward. There is the option of fine-art printing, too, on Fujifilm, Permajet or Hahnemühle papers, and an A3 print on paper from the latter brand is £10.99.

Sim Lab is a professional print and processing service with competitive prices, impressively quick turnaround times and great service. Its updated website is full of detail about the services it offers, from photo and giclée fine-art printing to mounting and laminating services. For its photo output, the latest laser printers are used for standard and large format prints made on Fujifilm paper. Prices are competitive: 78p for a A4 lustre print and £1.38 for A3. Furthermore, place your order by 1pm (Monday to Friday) and your prints will be with you the following day.

Sim Lab is a Hahnemühle Certified Studio, and a full fine-art giclée printing service is available with six carefully selected papers, including the textured Hahnemühle German Etching 310gsm and high-gloss Fotospeed PF Gloss 270gsm. Prints are produced on an Epson Stylus Pro 9890 and sizes up to A0 118x84cm are offered. An AO print costs £75.60, while it’s £72 for a 40x40in and a panoramic 60x20in is £66.78. Custom photo gifts are also available, including canvas prints, photo wraps and personalised photo wall stickers

Peak Imaging

WhiteWall

Peak Imaging offers film processing (E6, C-41 and black & white) including 35mm, 120 and sheet film formats, scanning and a broad range of printing services. For C-type prints, there’s a choice of finishes and types. For example, you could go for gloss on Fujifilm Crystal Archive DP II for high-impact prints – ideal for commercial use. Or, if you want to make an even bolder statement, there’s Fujifilm’s Fujiflex, a polyester-based, super high- gloss material. If you prefer a more subtle approach, there’s also the Fujifilm Satin Matt finish. Kodak Endura Premier Metallic

paper is another option, although prices are 50% higher than standard prints. There’s also an extensive range of sizes available, with an A4 gloss print costing £2.89 and A3 £5.25. If you want giclée prints, Peak Imaging offers the choice of five Hahnemühle papers, so you can opt for the fine-art look of the award-winning William Turner textured finish or, if you prefer something more traditionally photographic, there’s Photo Lustre 260gsm or Photo Gloss 260gsm. For a fine-art print, an A3 print costs £13.14.

From when WhiteWall was set up in 2007, the focus has been on gallery-quality output. It offers a wide range of printing techniques and presentation methods. For example, inkjet prints on Hahnemühle Fine Art Pearl are made using Epson K3 inks; photo prints on Kodak Pro Ultra Endura paper are produced using a Lightjet 500 XL; and the latest process is UV-Print, where a seven-colour process is used with ink hardened by UV light. As a guide, a Lambda print on Fujifilm Crystal Archive DP II paper costs £8.95 for a 30x20cm sized print, and sizes up to 180x120cm are available.

WhiteWall offers several presentation options, like a canvas or framed print, with the choice of nine options. For a more individual look, there are acrylic and metal prints. A 30x20cm original photo print under acrylic costs £39.95; the same size acrylic print is £30.95. Direct print on aluminium Dibond offers a top-grade print with great image longevity. Prints are made directly on to aluminium Dibond, a three- layer composite material, using a seven- colour process. Because it’s lightweight, this form of presentation suits large prints. A 30x20cm Dibond print costs £25.95.
