THE GODOX OF SMALL THINGS
The Godox answer to a portable LED light is the 60W ML60, which costs £246/$249 and is roughly the same size and shape as a water bottle or 70-200mm f/2.8 lens – with the body weighing 770g. It’s daylight-balanced only, but a dial can adjust the colour temperature by up to 200K warmer or colder. The light is accurate, with a CRI rating of >96 and TLCI of >97. The power is also adjustable from 0-100%, using a second dial. There is a built-in fan which runs very quietly, but it can be turned off for critical audio when recording interviews. The ML60 also contains eight built-in light effects that include three lightning patterns, flash, paparazzi, TV and broken bulb. Anything like this from a daylight- only beam won’t be great, but at least they’re there. The light comes in a custom case with a standard reflector that uses a Godox- specific mount. There are a range of modifiers such as a softbox, but Godox also offers a Bowens adapter so you can use standard modifiers too – a sensible idea for those on a budget. There’s an optional remote control, which would be useful as there’s no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth app to change settings. You have to actually turn dials, old-school style. To mount the light to a stand, a large handle fixes underneath. This has a useful tilting lever to allow adjustment. It’s designed so that the Godox can be taken off a stand and handheld – which is a very easy prospect as it’s such a light and compact build. The front of the grip has a mounting point for an adapter plate, which accepts a pair of Sony NP-F batteries to power
GRIPPING STUFF The Godox ML60 comes with a reflector and battery grip which is also a tilting light stand adapter
“The strength of the ML60 is its small size and easy portability, as well as its ability to use Sony NP-F batteries on location”
the unit on location. These are a common and inexpensive power source. The strength of the ML60 is its small size and easy portability, plus its ability to use NP-F batteries on location. These are far more affordable than V-Mount batteries, which are also bulkier. With a softbox, it’s a great location light – though it’s not that powerful. In low light or a darkened studio, it can be used through a softbox or diffusion panel and is ideal for headshots. Take the modifier off and it can be a hard light too. So, it’s a decent buy and has lots of uses. And with it being so compact, it’s a light you can take with you on shoots without adding too much bulk to your kit. godox.com
BEST BUY The affordable ML60 is the size of a 70-200mm zoom lens (left) and comes in a bag with accessories such as a grip and reflector
