ucked behind the church in the village of Stoke-by-Clare is a little gem of a school with a growing reputation among families wanting to keep their children together, whatever their age, gender or academic ability. Stoke is a ‘through school’, running from reception right up to sixth form. It evolved as such partly because of its rural location and the relative sparsity of other schools. The combination of broad age ranges and small class sizes creates a uniquely gentle and sensitive atmosphere. The majority of children have a brother or sister in another year group and it is charming to see the way children of different ages
play and interact. One of Stoke’s informal mottos is ‘friends for life’, and there is a huge emphasis on kindness and courtesy. Halfway between Colchester and Cambridge, Stoke-by-Clare is an outdoorsy, rural place where energetic children can thrive on fresh air and the home baking that emerges all day from the domestic science room. Exercise is important: many of the children ride horses, and one or two are national standard cross-country runners. The whole school – day pupils and boarders – follow a meat-free Monday policy, and the children’s environmental awareness was
