FEED Winter 2023 Web

TV TIME Despite a global rise in household TV ownership, the time spent watching TV has dropped – at least in the US. Adults spend about two and a half hours in front of the TV every day, down from over three hours in 2019. This is largely due to changes in viewing habits, with audiences turning more towards smartphones, laptops and tablets. It’s also due to a wider range of video content available, such as streaming services, YouTube, TikTok and the like.

MONEY MATTERS According to CableTV.com, the average price (in USD) of a stand-alone cable TV package is $83.35/month for 189 channels. This is opposed to $73 for ‘a basket of the top US streaming services’ in 2022 and a projected $87 for the same services in autumn 2023, as reported by The Verge (and originally published by the Financial Times ). In the UK, an annual TV licence costs £159. We’ve gathered the US and UK prices – at the time of writing – for the ‘top’ streaming services, based on number of subscribers: Apple TV+, Max (Now Entertainment being the UK ‘equivalent’), Disney+, Prime Video and Netflix. Monthly costs range from £6.99 to £10.99 for standard, ad-free subscriptions. Price, it seems, is not the biggest deterrent, with Netflix seeing 213.5 million subscribers as of 2021 while also being most expensive.

Many people – largely those from Generations X and Y – have traded in their black boxes for something a little snazzier: a smart TV. In the UK, 67% of adults owned a smart TV in 2022. Broken down by age group, 76% of those between 35 and 44 owned one, while only 49% of those aged 65+ did.
