SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER From 13 through 22 January, South Australia hosted the Santos Tour Down Under, a ten-day cycling event and opener to the UCI World Tour, which includes the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España. Every year, professional cycling teams race through Adelaide and the surrounding region covering a course of almost 1000km. For the past three years, Gravity Media has been the host broadcast company for the Santos Tour Down Under, appointed by Events South Australia and on behalf of the South Australian Government. While Gravity Media has been covering the race from the ground, Australian aerial filming company Flying Features has done so from the sky. This year, Gravity deployed several OB and satellite units, 20+ cameras and a crew of about 150 to cover the tour. Meanwhile, Flying Features streamed HD live video to Gravity from helicopter and drone cameras using LiveU’s transmission solution. The overall production included 40 hours of live coverage plus daily highlights for both domestic and international audiences. LiveU is an editorial tool that lets live content inform post-production, allowing broadcasters to adjust coverage as an event is evolving. Flying Features uses LiveU for other regional productions, such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht
Race, an annual Boxing Day affair. For the Santos Tour Down Under, it used LiveU’s LU600 field unit fixed to the body of a helicopter and completed with external static antennae. Together, Gravity Media and Flying Features helped broadcast the Santos Tour Down Under to a global audience. Australian cyclist Jay Vine took first overall, with a time of 16 hours, seven minutes and 41 seconds.
THE FELLAS OF FORMULA 1
In August 2022, The Fellas Studios launched Formula 1 talk show The Last Lap on YouTube. The show invites F1 influencers to discuss and analyse each race as it happens. To create engaging graphics and encourage viewer interaction, The Last Lap consulted Alex Pettitt and Singular. live. Pettitt uses real-time race data to create graphics for The Last Lap ’s live streams, including information on track
conditions, pit stops and lap deltas. The dynamic graphics cycle throughout the show, continuously assessing data as it comes through, with static graphics for starting grids and live predictions. Singular.live provides a social comment dock, letting viewers send messages to be displayed on the live feed. The Last Lap also recently expanded to TikTok and has already amassed over 27,000 followers.
