The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is a public four-year university located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area with a Communications division offering majors in video journalism and production. Its programme focuses on training students to develop career- ready, bilingual multiplatform storytelling skills. UTA produces multiple English and Spanish language student newscasts per week. UTA first acquired core Ross solutions for multicamera video studio productions including a Carbonite Switcher (Vision Mixer), XPression Graphics & Video Playout Server plus the educational version of the Ross browser-based Inception newsroom system for accessible, collaborative pre-production planning and live production. This gave a strong technology set to teach video journalism production skills utilising industry- standard solutions for fundamental, connected and traditional manual workflows where students staffed each production position. UTA noticed that the majority of television station groups hiring students had either adopted or were planning to adopt Ross OverDrive for Automated Production Control (APC) with repeatable, high-quality newscasts. To stay ahead, UTA began to plan long-term curriculum changes for adoption of this tech, preparing students to graduate with careers. When Ross began offering an educational version of OverDrive to schools, UTA’s School of Communication began to budget for OverDrive adoption. UTA eventually approved their funding request, citing measurable market demand for operators, adoption of the solution and a strong customer experience working with Ross.
