Third Space Learning is the largest provider of online maths tuition to schools in England. Here’s what founder and CEO Tom Hooper thinks of the latest in edtech. Q What are the most effective tech tools today? A Hardware is critical. However, categories are more important than specific tools. These include communications, which allow teachers and students to support one another remotely; analytics, enabling instructors to understand student experience and engagement; and assessment, letting teachers track progress of online and offline streams of hybrid learning. Q How can tech tools be used to deliver better results? A First, remote learning must be seamlessly integrated into class learning, with the two working in harmony. Then, hybrid learning must be planned well, with online learning plugging the gaps – or extending the strengths – that arise in a student’s wider class studies. Q What are the challenges in using tech to deliver hybrid learning? A While there are plenty of solutions, at their core, many offer similar functionalities. The critical element of effective tech is always set-up: consistent bandwidth, good headsets and minimal background noise or distraction. Q What can new hybrid and going forwards? A Tackling challenges of equal access is crucial. Hybrid learning could offer the potential to close the attainment gap by dramatically changing access to learning for disadvantaged students – increasing the impact teachers have. remote-learning tech deliver TOM HOOPER, THIRD SPACE LEARNING, FOUNDER AND CEO

FUTURE IS NOW Students are learning digital skills while they complete tasks

IN THE NEAR FUTURE, EMERGING TECH WILL CONTINUE OFFERING NEW DIMENSIONS

NEW TECH, NEW LEARNING In the future, emerging tech will offer new dimensions to the hybrid educational experience. For instance, scenario-based learning can take place using virtual and augmented reality, exposing learners to real- life experiences in a controlled environment. This could be applied to deal with a road traffic accident, or used for healthcare students trying to understand difficult care scenarios. We’ve already seen it at play in some more advanced academic institutions.

“Hybrid learning can enable students with other commitments to engage in learning at a time that suits them with more flexibility. For example, those with work, caring or parental responsibilities can regularly access learning remotely where traditional, timetabled, face-to-face lessons may have previously been difficult to attend,” explains Hollier, who is also director of blended and online learning at Heart of Worcestershire College. “Certainly, the future is bright with many possibilities.”
